It's that time of year again... when the tiny vampires come out to play ๐ŸฆŸ

Mosquito season is BACK which means it's time to start your pets on heartworm prevention. Thankfully, Heartworm disease is still rare in Ontario, however that is because we have been good at keeping our pets on prevention during the summer months. Every year we hear of more cases especially in Southern Ontario - and trust us - the treatment is way less fun than the prevention. ๐Ÿพ

Cats can get heartworm too! The scary thing for cats is there is no treatment that is safe for cats. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

If you have your prevention, start it now and continue monthly until November/the cold weather is back and the mosquitos are gone.

Before you let your dog dive in, here's your quick water safety check from your friends at the clinic:

1. ๐๐จ๐ญ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ ๐ฌ ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ - even strong dogs can get tired or panic in open water. Use a doggy life jacket for boating, kayaking, or if you're in deep/current-heavy water.

2. ๐–๐š๐ญ๐œ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ & ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ ๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฌ - what looks calm on top can pull dogs under fast. Stick to shallow, calm areas and keep them on a long lead if you're unsure.

3. ๐‘๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐  - lake and pool water can irritate skin and ears. A quick rinse & ear dry helps prevent hot spots and ear infections.

4. ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐›๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž-๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐š๐ฅ๐ ๐š๐ž - warmer temps = higher risk of toxic blue-green algae blooms in lakes and ponds - THESE ARE DEADLY TO PETS
Red flags: water looks scummy, slimy or like a pea soup; smells musty or like rotting plants; bright green, blue or brown patches on the surface. If you see it, keep your dogs out. Ingesting even a small amount can be fatal.

5. ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ก ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ & ๐ฌ๐ก๐š๐๐ž - bring clean water so they don't drink form the lake/pool, and make sure there's shade to prevent overheating.

Little Oliver came to us with a big fluid filled cyst hanging from above his eye that was obscuring his view. The cyst was removed under general anesthesia and Oliver has a new outlook on life and looks even more handsome now that both his eyes are visible.

Heartworm in Canada - is it really worth having them on prevention? ๐Ÿพ

While heartworm is still relatively rare in Canada, we are starting to see some cluster pockets that are gradually increasing. Heartworm is a nasty parasitic ๐Ÿ›infection that can cause severe disease and treatment isn't easy, so prevention continues to remain the key.

We are lucky in Canada, as the colder weather helps reduce the transmission, reducing the incidence of heartworm. However, if we did not have our pets on prevention, the incidence of heartworm would start to rise. Heartworm prevention in Canada is currently still only needed from June to November when the weather is warmer and mosquitoes are active. ๐ŸŒžIf you are travelling with your pets to the USA (especially southern USA), we recommend heartworm prevention outside of those months as it is more common in that area.

Call us to book in your heartworm and tick testing and to pick up your heartworm prevention for summer months. Let's keep the risk of heartworm in Canada low by staying on top of our preventative options.

There was a time when hearing "FIP" meant heartbreaking news. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) used to be considered 100% fatal for our cat patients. ๐Ÿ’”

Today, that story is changing. Thanks to new antiviral medication, we're seeing cats with FIP not just survive, but thrive.

Meet Onyx ๐Ÿ’ž- our first FIP warrior. After his diagnosis, his family started him on treatment and he's now back to chasing toys, purring on laps, and living his best cat life.

FIP is still a serious disease, and treatment requires close monitoring, but there is real hope now where there wasn't before.

When we first met Onyx, he was not eating a lot, had a fever, but most notable was his very distended belly - this was all fluid in his abdomen, commonly seen in FIP cases.

We are very happy to report that he is almost finished his treatment and now is acting like a normal kitten with a great appetite, his swollen belly has resolved and he is very playful. Great job Onyx and family!!! ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ˜ป๐Ÿพ
