Feeding Roaming Dogs Safely

When helping roaming dogs, how you feed them can make a big difference. Here are some simple tips to keep both the dogs and your community safe:

Feed in a long line, not a pile.
This “trough style” feeding (laying food out in a long line or spread) helps prevent fights. Dogs have more space to eat without feeling they need to guard their food from others.

Feed away from main roads.
Choose a safe, quiet area to avoid dogs gathering near traffic. Feeding near busy roads increases the risk of vehicle collisions and can cause dogs to hang around dangerous areas.

Use consistent feeding spots.
Feeding in the same safe location each day helps build trust and makes it easier to monitor the dogs’ health and numbers.

Clean up after feeding.
Remove leftover food and packaging. This prevents attracting wildlife and helps keep the area clean and sanitary.

Observe the group’s behaviour.
If you notice tension or growling, spread the food further apart. Each dog should have space to eat without feeling threatened.

Provide fresh water if possible.
Many roaming dogs are dehydrated, especially in hot or dry weather. Place water bowls a few feet away from the food line to reduce crowding.

Small changes in how we feed can mean fewer fights, safer dogs, and healthier communities. 💖

Our family at the Brandon Humane Society is excited to introduce you to our 8 month old little girl Rue! Rue has only been with us for a short time and has already pulled on all of our hearts 💕 Rue is a playful, loving and gentle girl with a spirit that we would all love to possess. Rue has Osteochondritis, developmental orthopedic disease where cartilage fails to properly harden into bone, leading to a flap of cartilage separating from the underlying bone in a joint. In Rue’s situation, we believe that there was trauma to the shoulder and the area did not heal correctly. Despite the pain and the difficulty she has walking, Rue is a sweet and loving 8 month old pup ♥️ She is having surgery this week to give her a better chance at having a full life where she can run around and be the happy little(and I mean short legs!) lady she is. Rue has a long recovery of physio, meds and rest ahead of her but we know she will be the best little dog ever!🐾♥️
Rue is adoptable and after her recovery will make an absolute precious addition to your family ♥️♥️♥️

🎃Day 13 of Meow-Lo-Ween ➡️ Mira + Sora

😇😈Double the mischief and cuteness for our final day of Meow-Lo-Ween! 🖤🤎

Meet Mira and Sora, yet another sweet pair of sisters. They haven’t been with us long, just since September, but they are perfectly balanced and will both steal your heart. 💕

Sora, our little angel in black and white, is a bit more reserved; she has that calm, older-sister energy. She watches the world with quiet curiosity and keeps her halo polished. 🥹👼🤍

Mira, her grey tabby sister, is a bit bolder; definite little-sister energy. She isn’t afraid to use her voice to let us know she needs cuddles! If you open up their kennel door, she’ll climb right over Sora to jump right into your arms for a snuggle! 😂😈❤️

They’re almost 8 months old, which means their playful, affectionate energy is out of this world. 😽🌎✨They are absolutely thriving with their new feline friends in the cat room and it’s just so much fun to watch.

Are you a sweet or a salty person? Contact us today to come meet Mira and Sora so you don’t have to choose😻🐾✨

Brandon Humane Society: Who We Are

The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the Shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located.

In 1997, the Shelter moved to its new premise at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents - both cats and dogs - live in a building with heat and air conditioning , two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and kennels for approximately 30 cats and 30 dogs at any one time. When our kennels are full our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their homes.

Since we are a NO KILL Shelter, the atmosphere is very positive...our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come and visit to see for yourselves.
