Smart dogs sort toys by what they DO, not what they look like. So what does this ‘toy’ do Healey?

Most of us assume a dog who knows toy names has just memorised a list — "ball," "rope," "duck." But a 2025 study on so-called "Gifted Word Learner" dogs — a small group of dogs known for learning dozens of toy names naturally — found something more interesting.

These dogs weren't just matching a word to an object. When researchers introduced brand new toys they'd never seen before, the dogs could still pick the right one based on its function — "fetch" versus "pull" — even when it looked nothing like toys they already knew.

Note: This was tested in a small group of exceptionally gifted dogs, not typical pets — but it's a fascinating look at just how far canine cognition can stretch.
