🎃 Red Barn Halloween Tips for Happy Dogs! 🐾
Halloween can be fun for us, but it can be overwhelming for our dogs and puppies! Here are a few tips to help everyone have a safe and stress-free night:
👻 Costumes are optional! Never force your dog to wear a costume. If they seem uncomfortable, skip it! A festive bandana is a great alternative if they enjoy wearing one.
🎭 Strange costumes can be scary! Masks, hats, capes and unusual movements can make people look unfamiliar. Gradually introduce your dog to these sights at a comfortable distance, pairing them with treats and positive experiences. Don’t wait until tonight to introduce something that frightens them!
🚪 Create a safe space. Doorbells, knocking and excited trick-or-treaters can be overwhelming. Set up a quiet room away from the front door where your dog can relax undisturbed.
🦴 Keep them busy! Offer a stuffed Kong, lick mat, chew or food puzzle to help them settle while the Halloween excitement happens outside.
🐕 Know your dog! If your dog is worried about strangers, costumes or busy environments, leave them at home rather than taking them trick-or-treating. There’s no need to put them in a situation they aren’t comfortable handling.
🚪 Prevent escapes. Keep dogs safely behind a closed door or secure barrier when handing out candy. With the door opening frequently, even a normally reliable dog could slip outside.
🍫 Keep treats out of reach! Chocolate and sugar-free candies containing xylitol can be dangerous to dogs. Keep all Halloween goodies safely stored away.
🎃 Remember: Your dog doesn’t need to participate in every Halloween activity to have a great night. Sometimes, the best treat is a quiet evening at home!
