Winter is here, but so too are those pesky fleas! 🐱

Whilst flea eggs will remain dormant outdoors during cold weather, they can still hatch in the toasty indoor conditions of our homes. Adult flea bites will cause itchy skin lesions in your pet, which may require veterinary treatment to settle. Additionally, infestations of fleas can be difficult to eradicate from your house. 🔍

While our canine companions have furry coats, it’s important to remember that many breeds will still feel the cold during winter. 🐶

Unless your pet is an Arctic breed or similarly thick-coated, they will require a padded jacket at night or when outdoors during cold weather.

Every outdoor dog should also have access to a dry sleeping spot that is protected against draughts, with some warm, soft bedding that they can snuggle down into. 🛏️

Did you know that colder weather can affect your dog’s tail? 🐾

“Limber tail” (a.k.a. acute caudal myopathy) is a condition where dogs develop sudden pain around the base of their tail, leading to several days of discomfort and abnormal tail positioning.

This issue most commonly occurs in active large breed dogs, particularly those who have been swimming or playing vigorously outdoors in cold weather within the previous 24 hours.

Should you notice any discomfort in your pet during chilly weather, we’d advise hot-footing it to our clinic for a prompt veterinary assessment! ❄️

Finding unexpected puddles from your previously house-trained senior dog? 🚽 This isn't naughtiness - it could signal health issues like urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, or cognitive decline.

Occasional hairballs are normal for cats, but frequent vomiting in older cats needs attention. 🐈

Common causes include kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, and diabetes – all treatable conditions if caught early. Other causes can include food allergies, pancreatitis or even intestinal cancers.
