Dr. Thomas Hamilton graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, he has always had a keen interest in all things horses. Prior to his studies Tom surrounded himself within the Horse Industry, working with Thoroughbred Trainers and as a stable hand/strapper for some of Western Australia’s to

p stables. Since graduating, Tom has embarked on a veterinary career focused highly on Equine Medicine and Surgery with a strong focus on equine dentistry and maintaining performance in equine athletes. As a mobile veterinarian, Tom enjoys the ability to visit his patients at home in their normal environment and surroundings, allowing him to provide top quality services with little stress on his patients or their owner. He also loves that his work allows him to travel all around Perth and the surrounding countryside, allowing him to soak up all of the beauties of his home town. In his spare time, Tom loves outdoor activities, in particular playing lacrosse, fishing, boating, dog training and watching his Thoroughbreds train and race. His two dogs are 'Pippa' the Rottweiler and 'Tully' the Kelpie. His other family pets include two very spoilt cats named 'Milo' and 'Marley'.

WOLF TEETH: SMALL TEETH, BIG IMPACT

Wolf teeth are small vestigial teeth left over from an earlier stage of horse evolution. Not every horse has them, but when present they are usually found just in front of the first cheek tooth. They can occasionally appear in other areas of the mouth too.

Wolf teeth typically erupt between 6 and 18 months of age and can sometimes interfere with the bit. If your vet dentist feels they are likely to cause discomfort or performance issues, removal may be recommended. Interestingly, if wolf teeth are left in place, the erupting adult 06s at around 2.5 years of age can sometimes resorb them, depending on the position of the tooth.

⚠️ What many people don't realise is that wolf teeth contain nerves and have a blood supply. They are living teeth, not just loose fragments of bone.

For this reason, wolf tooth extraction should always be performed under sedation and local anaesthetic by your veterinary dentist. We are fortunate to live in a time where we have access to effective pain relief, and if a procedure is likely to be painful, we should be using it.

Good dentistry is not just about floating teeth. It's about ensuring the horse's comfort and welfare throughout the entire procedure.

We've been a little quiet on our socials lately, but it's been a busy few weeks here at Perth Horse Dentistry!
We've been out on Wheatbelt runs, carrying out dentals and extractions, and keeping plenty of horses happy and comfortable. We've even had a few unexpected adventures along the way, including breaking a trailer! 😅
