✨ Loose Lead Walking ✨

Loose lead walking is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog if you want calm, enjoyable walks for both ends of the lead.

At The Canine Classroom, we use a combination of direction changes, clear communication through the lead, and reinforcement of desired behaviours to help dogs understand that pulling does not get them where they want to go. When dogs are consistently allowed to pull towards distractions, they are rewarded by gaining access to them, which can strengthen the pulling behaviour over time.

With puppies, we begin by keeping things simple. Through frequent changes of direction and gentle lead guidance when their focus drifts, we teach them to pay attention to their handler. When they make the right choice and re-engage with us, they are rewarded, helping to build strong engagement and communication.

Consistency is key. By regularly practising these skills on walks, dogs learn to maintain a loose lead more reliably, creating the foundation for advanced skills such as focused heeling and, where appropriate, greater off-lead reliability in the future.
A great walk isn’t about covering the most distance—it’s about building a stronger relationship with your dog every step of the way. 🐾

Meet Ronin, the very shy German Shepherd 🐾

Ronin is currently enrolled in our Boot Camp Program to help build his confidence and work through his fears. When he first arrived, he was extremely shut down and avoidant — too fearful to comfortably interact with both humans and other dogs. Now on day 4 of Boot Camp, we’re already starting to see small but meaningful progress.

We’d love for you all to follow along on Ronin’s journey, so we wanted to share some of his progress in real time. You’ll see parts of our process explained throughout these videos, but our main focus has been confidence building and allowing Ronin the space to work through things at his own pace, without added pressure.

In the last video, you’ll see Ronin starting to engage in some conflicted play — a really positive step for a dog lacking confidence. He’s showing so much curiosity around the other dogs and is getting closer each day to truly coming out of his shell. We’re so proud of the progress he’s already making 🖤

Watching dogs like Ronin start to feel safe, confident, and understood is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do, and we can’t wait to keep sharing his journey with you.

📅 Current Days: Wednesday to Friday

🕒 Split shifts — morning and afternoon runs (6-9 hour per day)

You’ll be responsible for safely picking up and dropping off dogs for daycare while ensuring every pup is comfortable, secure, and well cared for during transport.

Another successful week of group classes done 👏🐾

This weekend we focused on building focus around distractions, working through relaxed compliance, refining engagement with handlers in busy environments, polishing up heeling skills, and teaching owners how to properly reward their dogs during training to get the best results.

Another busy week at daycare and while we love all the training and skill work we do… there’s always time for FUN too 🐾
