All Creatures, Great and Small

One of the most exciting (and challenging) parts of being a vet is the incredible variety of animals we treat—ranging from the extra-large to the ultra-tiny. Meet my smallest patient yet: the common dog flea!

While fleas are typically seen as pests, they’ve also played a fascinating role in entertainment, particularly in the legendary flea circuses that date back to the 16th century. Originally, watchmakers used them to showcase their precision skills, attaching miniature gears to the tiny performers.

Inspired by this history, I’ve started my own unique hobby—collecting and training fleas to create an original flea circus! Fleas naturally leap 40 to 100 times their height, but with proper training, exercise, and a specialised diet, their jumping power and strength can nearly double. I even use tiny springs on their legs to amplify their jumps and enhance their back-leg muscles.

Since fleas feed on blood, I’ve developed a super-serum by centrifuging leftover blood to maximise their nutrition and keep them in peak condition. Small blood tubes serve as feeding troughs, ensuring they get just the right amount of fuel.

And don’t worry—pet owners never mind donating fleas to the cause, meaning I always have a fresh supply of eager little trainees.

✨ Coming soon: The Sunshine Coast Flea Circus! ✨ Proudly sponsored by Maroochydore Rd Vet Surgery. Stay tuned for the grand debut!

🌩️ Storm Incoming! Don’t Forget Your Pets! 🌩️

With the storm approaching later this week, we’re all making sure our homes and families are safe—but don’t forget about your furry friends!

Many pets are sensitive to storms, with subtle changes in the weather causing your pets to become anxious and distressed hours before the event. So it’s important to prepare in advance.

Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during the storm:

✅ Keep them inside – If that’s not possible, make sure your yard is secure.

✅ Update their ID – Ensure their microchip details and collar tags are current.

✅ Create a safe space – Close windows, turn on lights, and give them a cozy hiding spot.

✅ Provide distractions – Treats, toys, or enrichment activities can help keep them calm.

✅ Exercise & feed them beforehand – A tired and content pet is a calmer pet.

✅ Use ambient noise – Play music, TV, or white noise to help drown out the storm.

✅ Talk to your vet – Ask about anxiety relief options if your pet struggles with storms.

✅ Stay with them if possible – Your presence is comforting!

If your pet goes missing: Contact local vets, emergency services, and lost & found Facebook groups ASAP. Having a recent photo handy can help!

Let’s keep our pets safe and secure!

Many pet owners struggle with negative behaviours due to misunderstandings - including myself!

Training your furry friend can be a rewarding experience, but let’s be honest—it’s not always easy! From excessive barking to leash pulling and separation anxiety, behavioural challenges can test even the most patient pet parents.

While consistency and positive reinforcement go a long way, some behaviours require expert guidance. That’s where professional dog trainers come in! Seeking help isn’t a failure—it’s a proactive step toward a happier, well-adjusted pup.

If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, don’t hesitate to reach out! We can guide you on whether additional training support might be the right move.

This is our dog Zephyr, who is very loving and also very strong willed. But by the end of our first session with Shannon, we knew we would be able to overcome her behavioural difficulties with consistent training. Unleashed Dog Training QLD

It's going to be hot today!!

Did you know?

On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar 30–40°C higher than outside—reaching 70°C on a 30°C day. 75% of this increase happens in just 5 minutes after the car is shut! Even slightly cracked windows barely help, with temperatures still dangerously high.

Protect your Pets

Leaving pets in cars, even for a short time can be fatal. Never leave pets unattended in a car, not even for a quick errand.

Early Signs of Heat stress include:
1. Lethargy
2. vomiting and diarrhoea
3. incoordination
4. Rapid and heavy breathing as the dog tries to cool itself down.
5. Thick or excessive saliva production.
6. Red or Darkened Gums
7. Elevated pulse as the body struggles to regulate temperature.
8. Collapse / Coma
9. Seizures

If you think your pet is showing these signs please seek immediate veterinary attention.

Stay informed and spread awareness!

Small but Deadly!

This is an engorged Paralysis Tick (Ixodes holocyclus). If you live in southeast Queensland, they’re around all year!

Not very big, hey? In their nymphal stage, they’re just slightly larger than a pinhead. However, once they latch onto a host, they begin feeding on blood and rapidly engorge.

The toxin produced by these ticks develops slowly in their salivary glands over a few days, meaning ticks can remain on your pet for some time before you notice any signs. Once the toxin is secreted, it can cause a rapid decline in your pet’s health.

Common signs to watch for include:
* Mild weakness or ataxia in the hind limbs (a "drunken" gait) — sometimes mistaken for lameness.
* Respiratory distress or increased breathing effort.
* Loss of appetite (inappetence).
* Vomiting or regurgitation.
* Changes in vocalisation.

If you find a tick on your pet, remove it immediately. Keep the tick to show your vet for proper identification. There are no strict rules for removal; usually, when you pull, the entire tick will come out. Avoid applying alcohol or other chemicals to the tick, as these can cause skin irritation to your pet. Simply use tweezers or your fingers and pull it off. Sometimes, an inflammatory reaction (a "tick crater") may remain on the skin, which people may mistake for part of the tick.

Treatment is essential. Left untreated, your pet’s condition can deteriorate rapidly.

Ensure your pet is protected with a tick prevention method, such as monthly chews, spot-on treatments, or the NEW ANNUAL INJECTION!

Visit our clinic or call us at 5445 1333 if you have any questions or concerns.

Health check for this life-saving Eastern Brown Snake!

This beautiful brown snake had a quick health check with Dr. Matt from Maroochydore Rd Vet Surgery before being sent down south to be a part of the life-saving antivenom program.

The production of antivenom is so important in this day and age, with lots of pets and people coming into conflict with venomous snakes each year and requiring antivenom to save their lives.

Only certain individual snakes are selected for this program each year. This is all done under Government issued permits.
