We were given a bunch of Jerusalem artichokes. After replenishing the soil with compost and Organic Life pelletised chicken manure, we planted them in the sunny south-east corner of the garden. Apparently they can grow between 1.8 to 3 metres tall, so we may end up having to tie them to the adjacent trellis.

This morning we started another biointensive compost pile. The many layers included coarse brown materials (like branches), mowed green waste from the garden, horse manure, banana leaves, the remains of a dead fish, coffee husks, coffee grounds, rock dust, wood shavings, fruit & veg scraps, chicken manure, straw, worms from the compost, bio char and some soil an compost.

We covered the pile with hessian sacks and a tarp and will water it twice a week. The PVC pipe in the middle is to help water the middle and the base of the pile.

It appears that someone must have picked one of our passionfruits and thrown it in the Food Forest. 😮 Fortunately we found it during our Sunday working bee. We cut it open and were thrilled that it contained a lot of juicy pulp that was ready to eat! Oddly, the skin was yellow. 🤔 We're wondering whether the Panama Red vine we planted is actually a Panama Gold.

During the Food Forest working bee, we had to pull out all of the native pigface because it was so overrun with weeds. We planned to replant it, until one of our members advised us that it was actually Chilean pigface - not native pigface, which we'd assumed it was. We now plan to get some native pigface from Council that we can plant instead.

What glorious weather we had for our special Food Forest working bee blitz this afternoon. Eighteen garden members worked hard weeding, pruning, weeding, edging, weeding, digging, weeding, mulching and weeding some more. 😄 There's still a lot more work to be done, but we made a great start and it's looking so much better.
