✨Introducing Whiskey 🐾
Meet the adorable 1 year old West Highland Terrier, Whiskey!
Over the past few months, Whiskey has made serveral general health visits for vaccinations, his desexing and routine check ups. However, towards the end of October 2024, his wonderful and dedicated owners noticed some changes in his behaviour.
Whiskey began drinking significantly more water than usual and became quieter. His appetite begin to decrease slowly and his bathroom trips became frequent.
Our amazing Vet, Dr Victoria, grew very suspicious of these abnormal behaviours and decided to conduct some diagnostic tests, including a blood test and a urine analysis.
The results revealed that Whiskey had been diagnosed with "Juvenile Diabetes Mellitus." This chronic condition occurs when the pancreas fails to produce adequate insulin, which is essential for regulating glucose levels in the body.
Upon diagnosis, Dr Victoria initiated a treatment plan using a medication called "Caninsulin" which provides the insulin that his body can't produce on its own. Additionally, his diet underwent significant changes to assist the diabetes; following a low carbohydrate regimen. His dietary staple is the Prime 100 Crocodile and Tapioca, novelty single protein and hypoallergenic.
To monitor Whiskey's glucose Levels at home, Dr. Victoria equipped him with a Freestyle Libre glucose monitoring sensor, for his owners to track his blood glucose levels directly from their phone.
To ensure effective management of his condition, which was proving to be a bit more complex, Whiskey was referred to in north Ryde Internal medicine Specialists for ongoing support and monitoring. During the subsequent days, he returned to the clinic to have his blood glucose levels tested, allowing the Veterinary team to accurately adjust his insulin dosage.
With this comprehensive treatment plan in place, Whiskey is on his way to leading a healthy and happy life! He is a happy, bright and beautiful boy that we are always thrilled to have him at the clinic. 💕
