We are incredibly grateful for the support our clinic has been receiving lately..Please see below for important new updates:

•With our schedule filling quickly, we ask that current clients please book appointments at least one week in advance where possible.

•Routine bookings for litters and vaccinations may not be able to be accommodated if not given a weeks notice.

•For litters I recommend contacting me when your puppies/kittens are 3-4 weeks old to arrange a booking

•To ensure we can continue providing the highest level of care, we will also be limiting new client bookings for the time being

•Whilst we are busy we would also appreciate that you limit contacting Dr Mel and Michelle outside of business hours. We put everything into our day jobs and are finding clients increasingly contacting us out of hours. We need rest and time with our families so please make use of available after hour vets or wait until 9am to contact us and please no later than 3pm as Dr Mel has school pick up to attend too.

Thank you for your understanding and for trusting us with your pets 🙏

Some helpful hints here coming into Summer and with rain expected over the weekend ⛈️

Scratches, also known as pastern dermatitis, is a common skin condition that affects the lower legs of horses, especially around the back of the pastern and fetlock. It often looks like scabby, crusty, or raw patches and can make the area sore or swollen.

What Causes Scratches?
• Wet, muddy, or dirty conditions
• Irritation from sand, bedding, or rough surfaces
• Bacterial or fungal infections
• Sometimes, tiny mites or allergies

What to Look For:
• Redness, swelling, or heat in the lower leg
• Scabs, crusts, or hair loss
• Horse may be sensitive or sore in the area

How to Help Prevent Scratches:
• Keep your horse’s legs clean and dry
• Avoid letting your horse stand in wet or muddy areas for long periods
• Avoid sharing wraps or boots between horses, especially without cleaning/disinfecting between uses
• Check legs regularly for early signs

How to Treat Scratches:
• Clean the Area: Gently wash the affected area with a mild antiseptic shampoo or solution to remove dirt and scabs. Be gentle—don’t scrub hard or pick at scabs.

• Dry Thoroughly: After cleaning, make sure the area is completely dry. Moisture can make the problem worse.

• Apply Topical Creams: You can use creams or ointments recommended by your veterinarian, such as those containing silver sulfadiazine or other antibacterial/antifungal agents.

• Keep the Area Protected: If possible, keep your horse out of wet or muddy conditions while healing.

• Monitor for Infection: If you notice increased swelling, pain, or pus, or if the condition doesn’t improve, contact your veterinarian.

Remember, severe or persistent cases should always be checked by your veterinarian to make sure your horse gets the right treatment. If you have questions or concerns about your own equine, contact your veterinarian.

I found this one attached to a little dogs eyelid today who was booked in for a routine vaccination and was not on any preventative treatment..

Some helpful tips here to make sure Halloween with your fur babies is a success 🎃

🎃 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘀 👻

Halloween is fun for us, but it can be frightening for our furry friends. Here’s how to keep them safe and stress-free:

✅ Keep pets indoors – Create a quiet, secure space away from the hustle and bustle.
✅ Hide the treats – Chocolate and lollies can be toxic to pets. Store them out of reach.
✅ Costume check – If you want to dress up your pet, make it a comfortable costume that doesn't restrict movement, breathing or body language. Avoid costume elements that could be chewed or swallowed. Consider simpler alternatives like a bowtie or bandana.
✅ Decorations with care – Keep candles and dangling décor away from curious paws.
✅ ID tags & microchips – Ensure your pet's collar has an updated ID tag with your contact information. Check that their microchip details are current.
✅ Reduce noise stress – Play calming music and keep doors closed to block out spooky sounds.

Let’s make this Halloween safe and happy for everyone—including our four-legged family members! 🐾
