Please be aware of a local positive Hendra Virus case…
Vaccination remains the safest way to protect your horse and yourself 🐎

MEDIA RELEASE | Veterinarians urge vigilance and vaccination following Hendra virus case in Queensland

Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), has reinforced the importance of vaccination and biosecurity after Biosecurity Queensland today confirmed a case of Hendra virus in an unvaccinated horse in south-east Queensland.

Dr Laura Hardefeldt, EVA President, expressed strong support for the veterinarian who managed the case and reiterated the critical role of horse owners in preventing the spread of this deadly disease.

“We commend the referral veterinarian for their swift and professional response, which undoubtedly helped contain the risk to people and other animals,” said Dr Hardefeldt.

“This case is a stark reminder that Hendra virus remains a real and present threat. Vaccination is the best defence we have to protect horses, veterinarians, and the broader community.”

🌪️ Cyclone WARNING SEQ/NSW: How to Keep Your Horse Safe 🌪️

Here’s a guide and a few suggestions, as a good plan can make all the difference when wild weather hits. what you can do to prepare and protect your horses before, during, and after a cyclone.

✅ Before the Cyclone: Preparation is Key

* Identify the safest paddock — Choose an area that’s high and free from large trees, powerlines, or loose debris. Avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.

* Secure feed and water — Store extra feed in waterproof containers and fill water troughs and tanks ahead of time.

* Remove rugs and halters — Rugs can become waterlogged, get caught on fences, or restrict movement. Halters can also become a hazard if caught in debris or fences, especially in rising floodwaters.

* Tag your horse — Tag horses mane, Use a livestock grease marker to write your phone number on their coat, in case fences come down if you don't have of these options some use nail polish on the hoof.

* Check fences — Make sure fences are secure but easy for a horse to see if they need to navigate in strong winds or heavy rain.

* Prepare a cyclone kit — Include first aid supplies for horses and humans, extra halters and lead ropes, and emergency contact numbers (vet, neighbours, local council).

* Plan for evacuation — If you’re in a flood zone, know where you can safely move your horse ahead of time.

🌬️ During the Cyclone: Safety First

* Shelter vs Open Space? — In severe winds, open paddocks are often safer than small stables or sheds that could collapse. Ideally, choose a large paddock with natural shelter like thick trees (but not near gum trees or tall palms).

* Minimise flying objects — Remove loose items like buckets, jumps, and feed bins that could become dangerous projectiles.

🧹 After the Cyclone: Assess and Support

* Check fences and property — Walk the property carefully for broken fences, debris, or contaminated water.

* Watch for injuries — Check your horse for cuts, swelling, or signs of stress.

* Provide clean water and safe feed — Floodwaters can contaminate drinking water and spoil feed, so ensure fresh supplies are available.

👉 The best plan is made before the weather arrives — Cyclones can change quickly, so having a clear strategy gives you and your horse the best chance of staying safe.

Stay safe everyone!

Please note: These are general suggestions only. Every property, horse, and situation is different, so it’s important to make decisions based on your specific circumstances.

Important information from Biosecurity Queensland.
Please be alert for symptoms and signs of this disease and contact your veterinarian if concerned.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) has been detected at two piggeries in southern Queensland. There have also been recent detections in New South Wales and Victoria.

JEV is a zoonotic disease spread by mosquitoes that can cause reproductive issues in pigs and neurological signs in horses, such as lack of coordination, difficulty swallowing and impaired vision.

Here is a link to information about JEV for horse owners.

Important information regarding microchips registered with Home Safe…

🚨 IMPORTANT MICROCHIP UPDATE FOR PET OWNERS 🚨

HomeSafeID, the microchip registration database used by AWLQ, will soon no longer be operational. This means you will no longer be able to log in to update your contact details, change ownership, or identify your pet should they go missing. AWLQ urges all pet owners to check and update your pet’s microchip registration to keep them safe and easily identifiable should they ever go missing.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼:

✅ Check your pet’s microchip registration! Use your pet’s microchip number to search at Pet Address 👉 https://petaddress.com.au/. If you’re unsure of your pet’s microchip number, check your adoption agreement or community clinic invoice. You can also have your pet scanned at any vet clinic.

✅ Re-register with an approved national microchip database. If your pet’s microchip is currently registered with HomeSafeID, you must update the registration with another provider. There is a registration fee set by the new registry.

⚠️ If your pet’s registration is not updated and they become lost, vets, councils and shelters will be unable to view your contact details when scanning their chip, making it harder to reunite with your pet.

Please don’t wait — ensure your pet’s future is safe and secure today! 🐕🐈💜
