Did you know, 80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by age three?

Bart came in to us at 7.5 years old, never having had a dental assessment before by a vet. His procedure involved 10 extractions, some of these were his back molars (the big teeth with 3 roots).

Dental disease, particularly periodontitis, is widely considered a "silent assassin". By the time obvious symptoms like loose teeth or severe pain appear, the condition is often in its late, hard-to-treat stages.

Have a look at his before and after photos - what a difference! Bart's owners reports that he used to have the occasional cough and watery eyes, and they didn't realise those symptoms, however subtle, could've been related to his bad teeth. They also report that he is a completely different dog after the procedure, and is much happier now than before.

To properly clean the teeth and prevent disease, we ultrasonically scale teeth below the gumline. This is uncomfortable and cannot be done while your dog is awake. General anaesthesia keeps your dog completely relaxed, pain-free, and protects their airway from the water and bacteria we remove.

Would you like to book in for a free dental check with the vet and discuss your pet's dental health?

Momo with and without a cone :) a beautiful old soul either way

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a very common, non-malignant age-related enlargement of the prostate in intact (un-desexed) male dogs, affecting over 80% by age 9! It is caused by androgenic imbalances, resulting in blood in the urine, discomfort, or straining to p**p.

We met Momo who is nearly 15 years old a few weeks ago, with his owners noticing that he's been struggling to poo for a few months.

Being older and not castrated, and with one of his testicles not quite normal in appearance, we considered a couple of possibilities. Momo had a prostatic wash which ruled out cancer and infection. BPH then became top of our list.

His owners was overjoyed at the fact that it is a "fixable" disease. We went ahead and desexed Momo and general anaesthetics + recovery went well. After surgery, his owners tell us Momo is acting like a puppy for the first time in years. He is now going to the toilet normally and feeling great. We hope Momo has many years of pain free p**ping ahead of him.

Q. When IS the Right Time? ...

Our Vet Team performed humane euthanasia recently for 2 senior dogs who have been our patients for quite a number of years. When vets and nurses see animals come in and out of the clinic repeatedly for consultations and sometimes for longer day stays, with time these little furry friends (and their people) start creeping into our hearts. We think about them after work, and we check on them on occasion even when nothing is "wrong".

And so it's no easy task helping their lovely owners say goodbye to them, when the time is right. What we had been asked so many times recently is - when IS the right time?

Remember that using a calendar or journal is a great way to track subtle changes and make informed decisions during this difficult time.
By staying observant, providing care and attention to your pet, you can help ensure their remaining time with you is as comfortable and dignified as possible.

We are only one call away on 5630 1200 for advise. If it's easier to text, our text line is 0499 008 396.

Everyone knows that it's important to assess your senior pet's quality of life and prioritise their comfort and wellbeing. But can we be more specific?

Zeus was in a car accident recently but is recovery well. Here is his story xo

We are having a typical Manic Monday (named lovingly given the busy-ness that we have come to expect as routine). Reception received a phone call to say that 11-months old Zeus had just been hit by a car!

It was all hands on deck to make sure we had everything ready for him, as sometimes symptoms are masked after a big SHOCK on the body, and they appear fine one minute and crash the next.

On arrival, Dr Karen finds out that Zeus was only adopted on Friday (3 days ago!!) from a rescue organization. His new owners hadn’t had the opportunity yet to buy insurance for him, they barely had time to get to know him properly, and now this had happened. Luckily the person who hit Zeus stopped after the accident and relayed crucial information (speed of car, where impact was felt, how dog was immediately after the accident etc.) that helped our decision making process, and it was quickly noticed that yes, the injury seem to be limited to his front leg and specifically, his right elbow. It was double the normal size and seemed to be at a wrong angle à onto the X-ray table he goes after initial stabilization and pain relief. What can you see on this X-ray? If you say “nothing”, that’s OK – not the easiest thing to spot, but the elbow joint is sitting OUT of its normal place – his elbow is dislocated. Ouch!

Dr Karen liaised with Dr Jon at VSS about this case. Dr Jon recommended seeing the orthopedics team at Carrara – who will attempt to put the elbow back under general anesthetics. If they don’t succeed, surgery may be needed to “pin it in place”. Zeu’s new owners arranged to get out of work, drove Zeus from Ashmore City Vets to VSS, and they did in the end manage to place the joint back in place without surgery. Woohoo!

This photo on the right is Zeus 10 days later – living a very pampered life.

What a lucky boy. We hope everything goes smoothly from now on, and that your leg will make a full functional recovery. What a way to bond with your new humans.
