Making Tablet Time Easier
Giving tablets to cats can feel tricky. There’s no single “right” way — the best method keeps your cat calm, safe, and willing to take their medication.
Common ways tablets can be given:
• By hand – gently place the tablet at the back of the tongue and encourage your cat to swallow.
Here is a helpful video posted by one of our other clinics: https://www.facebook.com/reel/792548790338003
• Using a pill popper – guides the tablet safely to the back of the mouth while keeping fingers out of the way
• Hidden in food – may work for some cats, but take care as it can lead to food aversions. Tablets can be given whole or crushed (check with your vet first). Mix into a small amount of food to ensure it’s eaten, then offer the rest of the meal separately
• Multiple tablets in a capsule – can reduce the number of doses; always check with your vet first
• High-value treats – Churu, Greenies pill pockets, or a small piece of BBQ chicken (skin removed).
Use only a small amount and keep medicated treats separate from main meals
Other options:
Some medications may be available as liquids or transdermal gels.
Ask your vet if these forms are suitable for your cat.
Keep it positive:
- Calm handling, patience, and rewards make a big difference.
- Offer a favourite treat before and after medicating.
- For cats not motivated by food, try patting, brushing, or play.
(If your cat has special dietary needs, check with your vet before using treats.)
