🐴 Equine Surgery at Gisborne Veterinary Clinic 🐴

Here’s Dr Rohan and Nurse Meg performing a splint bone removal on one of our equine patients.

Splint bone surgery may be required following injury, fracture or ongoing complications. With careful surgical technique and appropriate aftercare, horses can be expected to have a great recovery 🐎✨

It takes a great team effort to get our equine patients through surgery and back on track, and we’re incredibly proud of the expertise and dedication of Dr Rohan and Nurse Meg. ❤️

🦷🐴 DENTAL MONTH HAS BEEN A BLAST! 🐴🦷

WOW… we have looked at SO many teeth over the past month — we’re talking THOUSANDS of teeth! 😲🦷

Here are a couple of our gorgeous pony patients showing off just how much variety we see during Equine Dental Month.

Sometimes the vet and nurse team are standing…
Sometimes we’re kneeling…
Sometimes we’re stretching, reaching and getting into some pretty interesting positions! 😂

From the tiniest little ponies to the biggest horses — we see them all! 🐴❤️

Regular dental care is such an important part of keeping horses and ponies healthy, comfortable and happy.

A huge THANK YOU to all our wonderful clients for trusting us with your horses’ dental care — and to our amazing vet and nursing teams for working through thousands of teeth! 🦷👏

Dental Month may be wrapping up, but good dental care is important all year round!

🐾📚 We LOVE Having Students Join Our Team! 🐴🐶

Did you know that Gisborne Veterinary Clinic receives more than 220 student placement applications every year? 😲

With that many applications, securing a placement with us can be a pretty tough gig! 🎓

We love welcoming students into the clinic — whether they spend a week, a few months, or even a whole year with us. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to experience life in a busy mixed veterinary practice and learn from our wonderful team.

Recently, we’ve had two students spend time with us — one completing a Small Animal placement 🐶🐱 and another undertaking a Large Animal placement 🐴🐄.

Both have been absolutely superb! They have worked hard, asked plenty of questions, jumped in to help wherever they could and, most importantly, have been an absolute delight to have as part of the team. ❤️

A huge THANK YOU to both of you for your enthusiasm, hard work and willingness to learn. We’ve loved having you with us!

🌟 Good luck with your veterinary nursing journeys — we have no doubt you’ll both do incredibly well.

🐾 Senior Pets Deserve Senior Care ❤️

As our dogs and cats get older, they often become experts at hiding signs of illness. What may seem like "just slowing down with age" can actually be an early indication of a medical condition that can be treated or managed.

Regular veterinary health checks are one of the best ways to help your senior companion enjoy a longer, healthier and more comfortable life.

A senior health check allows us to:
🐶🐱 Detect health problems before they become serious
🩺 Monitor weight, mobility and body condition
❤️ Check heart and lung health
🦷 Assess dental health and oral pain
👀 Examine eyes, ears and skin
🩸 Recommend blood and urine testing where appropriate to screen for conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes and thyroid disorders
💊 Review medications, supplements and pain management

Many age-related conditions develop gradually, and pets often don't show obvious signs until the disease is well advanced. Early detection means we can often begin treatment sooner, improving both quality of life and long-term outcomes.

Is your pet a senior?

🐱 Cats: Generally considered senior from around 10 years of age.
🐶 Dogs: Larger breeds may be considered senior from 7 years, while smaller breeds often reach senior status around 8–10 years.

If your pet is entering their golden years, now is the perfect time to schedule a wellness check.

📞 Call Gisborne Veterinary Clinic on (03) 5428 2805 to book your pet's senior health check today.

Healthy pets. Happy families. 🐾💙

🐴 August is Equine Dental Month! 🦷

Did you know horses can develop canine teeth, also known as tushes or bridle teeth?

These teeth are located on the bars of the mouth between the incisors and premolars. They are most commonly found in male horses, although some mares will develop them too.

Canine teeth typically erupt between 4 and 6 years of age and originally served as a defensive feature in wild horses. While they may appear as small, pointed teeth above the gumline, they actually have long roots with a hooked end, making extractions of fractured or diseased canine teeth much more complex than they appear.

During a routine equine dental examination, our veterinarians will:
🦷 Check canine teeth for tartar build-up
🦷 Assess for cracks, fractures and disease
🦷 Remove tartar with a dental scaler if required
🦷 Ensure your horse's mouth remains healthy and comfortable

Regular dental examinations don't just focus on the chewing teeth—they assess the entire mouth, helping identify issues early before they become more serious.

🎉 August is Equine Dental Month at Gisborne Veterinary Clinic!

Take advantage of our special Equine Dental Bundle for just $299 and give your horse the benefit of a comprehensive dental examination by our experienced equine veterinarians.

📞 Appointments are filling quickly, so call us today on (03) 5428 2805 to book your horse's dental.
