What is a sedate & groom?

A sedate & groom is a way of safely helping pets who find grooming uncomfortable, painful, or too stressful to cope with while fully awake.

It involves using tailored, light sedation so your pet can relax, stay calm, and feel less overwhelmed while we carry out essential grooming tasks like removing mats, clipping coats, or cleaning hard-to-reach areas.

This isn’t about a pet being “difficult” — it’s about making the experience calmer, kinder, and safer for them, especially when grooming would otherwise cause anxiety or discomfort.

Our goal is always the same: to reduce stress, prevent pain, and help your pet feel as comfortable as possible while they’re in our care 💛

Maple was our superstar patient who came in for her sedate and groom yesterday 🌟🥰

Ever wondered what a locum vet is? 🩺🐾

Meet Dr Cynthia and Dr Mick! They are two locum vets joining us for a couple of months.

Locum vets are qualified veterinarians who temporarily fill in at clinics when regular vets are away, clinics are short-staffed, or extra support is needed during busy periods.

They play an important role in helping clinics continue to provide quality care for pets without interruption — whether it’s for a single day or several months!

Locums bring experience from a variety of clinics, fresh perspectives, and help keep veterinary teams supported so your pets can continue receiving the care they need 💙

If you see Cynthia and Mick in clinic, please don’t be shy and say hello! 👋

This week is Dog Anxiety Awareness Week. Dog anxiety is more than just “nerves” — it’s a real emotional response that can impact your dog’s wellbeing 🐾

Signs to watch for:
Pacing, vocalising, trembling, hiding/clinginess, destructive behaviour, or panting when not hot.

Your vet can help you navigate how to reduce anxiety at home, whether it’s with supplement support, pheromone spray or medication.

If you find your dog becomes anxious at the vets, these are some helpful tips to reduce stress at their appointment or day stays:
• Bring their own bed or blanket (familiar smells help!)
• Pack a favourite toy or treat
• Keep drop-offs calm and low-key
• Let the clinic know if your dog is anxious — we can tailor their visit
• Consider pre-visit calming options if recommended by your vet

A little preparation can make a big difference in helping your dog feel safe 💙

Ever seen something like this under the microscope? 👀🦠

Take a guess… what are you looking at?

Here’s a hint:
• They live in the bloodstream of infected dogs
• They’re spread by mosquitoes 🦟

Any guesses?

What you can see wriggling around is microfilaria - the larvae of heartworm. Heartworm disease develops silently and can become life-threatening before you even notice a problem.

Because it is transmitted through infected mosquitoes, your pet doesn’t even need to come into contact with another animal to be at risk… just one bite can do it.

Prevention is simple. Treatment is not. 🩺

Contact your vet today to make sure your dog remains protected against deadly heartworm disease.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🤩

We’d like to take a moment to officially welcome our two newest staff members, Dr Tessa and Nurse Marine! 🎉

Tessa is a recent graduate of JCU, and already excelling in the clinic environment. Some fun facts about Tessa are:
1. She owns 2 border collies (Atticus + Finn), 2 cats (Hercules + Meg) and many, many fish 🐠
2. Tessa is a Cairns local, through and through - she grew up in Freshwater and can’t imagine living anywhere else!
3. Tessa also plays the guitar and loves all things music 🎸

Marine is one of our student nurses, currently completing her Certificate IV. Some facts about Marine are:
1. She has swum with both a whale shark AND a great white shark 🦈
2. While Marine was born and raised in France, she has actually seen more of Australia than Europe!
3. Marine has been around horses for nearly 30 years and says she feel most confident around equine friends (but loves meeting your furry companions) 🐾🐴

Make sure to say hello to Tessa and Marine when you see them in clinic next! 👋💙
