Is your pet constantly scratching their ears? It could be ear mites!

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are tiny parasites that live inside the ear canal and are especially common in cats—but dogs can get them too! They’re highly contagious between pets and can cause a lot of discomfort if left untreated.

Signs to look out for:
• Excessive scratching around the ears
• Head shaking
• Dark, coffee-ground-like discharge
• Red, inflamed ears
• Strong odour

Good news:
Ear mites are very treatable with the right medication from your vet! Early treatment helps prevent secondary infections and keeps your furry friend comfortable.

Prevention matters:
Many modern parasite prevention products also protect against ear mites. Keeping your pets up to date with their regular preventatives is an important step in reducing the risk of infestation

🐶🐱 Important tip:
If one pet has ear mites, all pets in the household may need treatment—even if they’re not showing symptoms yet.

Think your pet might have ear mites?
Book an appointment with us today and let’s get those ears healthy again!

Pet First Aid: Choking & CPR – What Every Pet Owner Should Know

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them. Knowing what to do if your pet is choking or not breathing could make a life-saving difference.

Signs your pet may be choking:
Gagging or retching
Coughing or pawing at the mouth
Difficulty breathing

What you can try:
Carefully open the mouth and check if you can remove the object
If needed, try techniques from the picture that help dislodge the object
If your pet is not breathing, begin CPR and chest compressions

🚨Important: Only perform CPR if your pet is unconscious and not breathing, and seek veterinary care immediately.

Many animal emergency visits could potentially be improved with basic first aid before reaching the vet. Learning these simple steps can help you stay calm and act quickly when your pet needs you most.

If you ever have concerns about your pet, contact us on (07) 3420 2855 or seek emergency veterinary care straight away.
