This is one of Dr Eden’s patients Charlie, with his owner, Milly. Charlie was showing some signs of bit resistance when being ridden, so they decided to do a dental check, given he was recently purchased. They were told when they purchased him that he had already had a dental in January, however dental exam this week revealed some sharp points that had been missed on his very back cheek teeth.
This small oversight meant he was very uncomfortable when being ridden. The sharp edges were causing him to bite his own cheek every time he closed his mouth. Dr Eden commented that his mouth was otherwise perfect. Milly rode Charlie two days later and commented that he was significantly more relaxed and not fiddling with the bit. This just shows that even minor abnormalities in the mouth can have a dramatic effect on comfort when riding! 🦷

Horse’s teeth continually grow, so it doesn’t take long for abnormalities to develop and worsen. Charlie’s example involves very mild changes, however it’s common for Dr Eden to open a horse’s mouth and see significant pathology which can also contribute to weight loss, choke and impaction colic.
