Sweet Echo recently came to see us after her family noticed she just was not herself. She had become lethargic and quiet and was progressively getting worse. After a thorough examination and diagnostic testing, Dr. Mia diagnosed Echo with a suspected Red-Bellied Black Snake bite.
Many people associate snake bites with the warmer months, but snake envenomation can still occur during cooler weather, especially during milder autumn days. In Echo’s case, Dr. Mia suspected she had actually been bitten approximately 24hours prior to presentation, which can happen with some Red-Bellied Black Snake envenomations where signs may initially appear vague or delayed.
Red-Bellied Black Snake venom contains toxins that can cause significant muscle damage (myotoxicity) and destruction of red blood cells (haemolysis). The liver and kidneys often work extremely hard to process and clear these toxins from the body.
Unfortunately, antivenom is most effective against venom that is still circulating freely in the bloodstream. Once venom has already attached to tissues and caused damage, the antivenom cannot reverse that injury — it can only bind the remaining unbound venom. Because of this, Echo required several days of intensive supportive care in hospital while her body worked hard to recover.
During her stay with us, Echo quickly stole the hearts of our entire team. She was an absolute sweetheart from day one, and we loved seeing her become a little stronger each day. Due to the muscle breakdown and inflammation caused by the venom, she was understandably very sore and uncomfortable at times, so supportive nursing care made a huge difference which our nurses happily provided. Good bedding, pain relief, IV fluids, careful monitoring, and lots of love were all important parts of her recovery. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well here at North Hill it takes a team to ensure the best possible outcome.
Echo’s family visited her every single day, and after 4 days in hospital she was finally reunited with her very excited family at home. Since discharge, she has continued recovering with medications to support her organs and ongoing rest.
Today Echo returned for repeat blood tests, and we are incredibly happy to say she is well on the road to recovery and getting back to her happy self again.
Thank you to Echo’s wonderful family for trusting us with her care — and thank you, Echo, for being such a brave girl. 💚
