Quick intervention makes all the difference! When this foal wasn’t coming out after 15 minutes we were called to lend a hand. A late night foaling of this monster c**t, but all’s well that ends well and he passed his IgG this afternoon

Everything happens fast with foaling, and it’s better to call early than to wait and see and end up with a sad result

It’s colic season!
We are seeing large numbers of horses with colic at the moment, and the majority of those are large colon impactions.
Impactions occur when feed material lodges in one point (commonly the pelvic flexure as in the photo), and can cause severe discomfort.
Treatment can be as simple as pain relief and tubing, or as complex as intensive fluid therapy in hospital, or even surgery.
Some tips to reduce your risk:

- Provide plenty of clean water that is easily accessible
- Take rugs off every day (even if it’s cold in the morning) to prevent over heating
- Add salt or electrolytes to the feed to encourage drinking
- Feed wet feeds such a beet pulp or soybean meal
- Feed good quality roughage and plenty of it
- Molasses or electrolytes in the water may encourage some horses to drink

As with everything, prompt action can mean the difference between a good and a bad outcome. Don’t hesitate to call at the first sign of colic

Shock wave therapy uses targeted pressure waves in strong pulses to act on different body tissues. Shock wave is particularly useful for tendon and ligament injuries, back pain and some joint pain.
