CAT CARRIERS - Convenient, comfortable & caring or creepy, crummy and confusing
At Raise 'n Rescue we always strongly insist upon the use of a decent cat carrier when transporting cats and kittens. We have seen many designs of carriers come and go and cat carriers were not spared from fashion trends. Unfortunately, often a 'trendy' carrier does not necessarily meet the requirements for an acceptable carrier.
So what are the requirements, we believe, a carrier should have?
* Most important is SAFETY. When transporting a cat, we believe cats should be safe inside a carrier. Kitty should be comfortable, yet be able to move with ease inside.
* A carrier should be sturdy and the sides must be strong and not move if the cat falls against it.
* Carriers should not have soft sides as that can be dangerous when the cat falls against it inside or when heavy object falls against it on the outside.
* The door of the carrier should be secured locked and not easy to open and the carrier must have good ventilation.
* There must be no gaps big enough for a cat's head to get stuck in or sharp edges where a cat can get hurt or paws can get stuck.
* The limbs of the cat should not be restricted and the cat must be able to turn around inside, with ease. However, there must not be too much space inside the carrier for the cat to fall and roll around.
* Cats should be able to choose to sit or lie in a natural, comfortable position without being forced to be in an unnatural position or hanging.
* When transporting cats, it is advisable that the carrier be closed up with a blanket to help keep the cat calm.
*Always only transport one cat per carrier. Even if cats get along well, they can get anxious or scared when traveling. A traumatic experience may encourage fighting when adults are together in a confined space like a cat carrier.
* Don't pet cats while driving or transporting them. It is most suitable to leave them be covered up so they don't get anxious or spooked.
In our opinion the best carriers for cats are a comfortable sized, hard body, top opening carrier.
strongly recommend the use of hardbody carriers to transport cats.
A decent cat carrier is a great commitment, invest well.
