Attention...attention !!ππ’
When grooming old dogs,
Prioritize comfort over aesthetics. The golden rule is to keep sessions short (30β45 minutes), use supportive, non-slip surfaces, and stop immediately if the dog becomes stressed, shifting the focus to routine hygiene and health monitoring rather than a perfect cut.
Embrace "Comfort Grooming": Allow your dog to sit or lie down during the session. Many dogs are much more relaxed when groomed on a folded towel on their own bed.
Prioritize Non-Slip Surfaces: Older dogs lose balance and sliding aggravates arthritis. Always use a rubber bath mat in the tub and non-skid orthopedic mats on the grooming table or floor.
Gentle Brushing: Senior dogs have thinning skin that bruises and tears easily. Always use soft-bristled brushes or rubber mitts, and brush in the direction of hair growth
Avoid Restraint: For dogs with advanced joint pain, handle them gently and do not force them into painful gymnastics
Prevent Matting: Mats are dangerous for seniors as they pull tightly on fragile skin, restricting movement and causing hot spots. Proactive daily brushing and shorter clipping help avoid painful de-matting sessions.
Monitor Health: Grooming is the perfect time to check for any new lumps, bumps, or rashes, and to assess nail length.
And above all....patients, love, and more patients, slow steady hands that help prevent any nicks from sudden movements, and making their comfort a big priority.
Hugs and love to all the pet parents of geriatric floof paws..your doing a great job, love love love. Makes their world go round...ππΎπ«π€π₯°
