Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

This beautiful young cat was surrendered to us at outreach. We have NO space for this cat as the current foster has three dogs and another dog coming in tomorrow that is known to kill cats. If anyone can please help with a temporary safe space?

Signing up dogs for sterilisation wherever we go!

When one of our volunteers needed post exposure shots after getting bitten by a dog on our vaccination campaign, she met with this nurse at the Hoedspruit clinic from Acornhoek.

She was telling her about her male dog that she loved so dearly and a new female dog that made her way to her garden. Though she loves dogs, she said she couldn’t keep it because she can’t have the babies. So her idea was to surrender the dog to HALO but as we explained the option to sterilise her dog, she was more than happy to keep it and take care of it.

So we got her dog the next week and sterilised it immediately. Happy dog, happy owner!

What’s better than one HALO rescue? TWO 🙂

Two HALO adoptions in 6 months and these two are now best buds and a joy for the family where they are spoiled rotten!

Thank you for adopting saving lives of these lovely dogs (the doggie on the right is NOT Jack, he is still looking for his forever home!)

Remember Sporro?

He has made a full recovery and went home today! His owner came to visit him in camp every day and is so grateful we were able to help his much loved dog. He has also cleaned his garden where the dead chicken, the likely culprit, was found. We will do a follow up with Sporro next week when we can also vaccinate him. A massive thank you to everyone who helped with donations big and small. You really saved this dog’s life!

We can’t save them all 💔

Unfortunately little Jim from the Willows had to be put to sleep this morning. Though he was eating and drinking well we could see something was off and it turned out he was blind and had a build up of fluids in his brain. The humane decision was made to put him to sleep…

WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS MANDELA DAY?

18 JULY is Mandela Day, the day to dedicate 67 minutes of your time to helping others, reflecting the 67 years Mandela devoted to fighting for social justice.

🌟Join our Mandela Day Challenge 2025 – Help uplift the lives of the community dogs this winter🌟

🛖Over 4 in 10 dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit lack basic shelter and sleep outside with no protection from the weather elements. On average only 1 in 10 dogs has access to bedding material.

🐶This Mandela Day (18 July) HALO wants to sterilise 67 dogs (or more if possible!) from the OAKS and give them a warm bed this winter. And to do so we need your help!

🐕For R 500 / EUR 25 HALO can sterilise one dog and make a basic shelter by joining two plastic tubs with cable ties. With bedding material this cheap and durable solution makes for a warm and comfortable shelter this coming winter.

💪How can you help with this challenge?

Sporro is back on its feet, still very unstable but this is incredible progress after being completely paralysed from botulism ⭐️

Thanks to the wonderful team of Provet Animal Hospital these community dogs never cease to surprise us with their resilience. His owner heard the great news and will come over to camp after work to visit him as he misses him dearly 🥰

These absolutely adorable little pups, Coco (blonde girl) and Oliver (black and brown boy) are now ready for their forever homes. They were surrendered in very poor condition and our amazing foster parents did a stellar job making them happy and healthy pups with good manners. Both are up to date with their vaccinations and will be sterilised at 6 months.

The pups are used to be around children and make excellent additions to any family!

Never too old to learn about rabies prevention! With our vaccination campaigns on a roll, we hand out educational brochure to the young people. But this grannie was also very interested in a copy and intently read it all ❤️
