Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

Poor Tsanko from The Oaks came in late last night. Fortunately we had a vet come in to check him out this morning, Tsanko is not feeling well and is very nauseous. He was put on a drip that immediately perked him up a lot. He will stay in camp for a while to get better. Our camp is currently bursting out of its seams with 39 dogs in our care. Imagine the costs involved…. Any help is therefore much appreciated ❤️

Poor Danger is anything but what his name suggests. He fortunately has a good appetite and will have a long way to go… but he has started wagging his tail and enjoying sleeps close to our team members…

🐾 This is Ernie - Joy’s last little pup looking for a home 🐾

Ernie may be the smallest pup of Joy’s litter but he sure has the biggest personality. He is such a character and not afraid of anything. This healthy boy is now 11 weeks old and fully vaccinated.

He has been well socialised with other dogs and lots of children and adults and he is the funniest of the bunch. We expect him to grow into a big boy around 30 kg.

Sorry for the shaky video but these two poor souls, Danger and Molly, came in late yesterday afternoon as we were collecting another emergency case. The owner of these two dogs stopped us on the road and told us he is quite desperate that his dogs are not eating and he tried everything.

The one is in very, very bad shape, only weighing 4.5 kilos. Both have no appetite, a common indication of worms or tickbite fever. So our protocol treatment is rolled out to gradually fatten them up and nurse them back to health. Tickbite fever left untreated is often a killer to young dogs that don’t have any reserves or full immunity. The treatment is a simple antibiotic for 28 days and supportive vitamins and supplements. Usually within 4 days we already see definite improvement and by three weeks the dogs are at normal weight again. Let’s hope Danger and Molly will feel better soon ☘️

Their treatment is not hugely expensive but still an expense we do not have funds for. The 28 days treatment per dog comes to R500.

Any support big or small will go a long way!

In anticipation of our 10 Year birthday celebrations of HALO we organised a fun dog walk on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. It was great to see this beautiful group of people and dogs, enjoying the walk.

Thanks to everyone we are able to sterilise 12 dogs that are going in next week!

A special thank you goes out to Jeroen Dijk of Taaibos Bush Lodge for organising the walk and arranging the delicious pancakes!

This sweet man is George. He was with us in the summer after he had an unfortunate run in with a snake. Now he has Transmissible Venereal Tumours (TVT), a contagious cancer.

George’s TVT also spread to his nose and there was a big lumb developing on his head, that caused pain, nosebleeds and difficulty in breathing.

Wednesday was his first TVT treatment with dr Debbie Coetzee at Hoedspruit Animal Hospital - ProVet and see the incredible before and after, just 2 days later!

George will likely still need 4-5 weekly TVT treatments. Can you help us pay for George’s treatment? The total costs come to R1,000

Tiger is back in our care and it’s not good news… 😢

Sweet Tiger had her enucleation earlier this year as it had a cancerous growth on the eye ball and surrounding tissue.
Unfortunately, she is now covered in bad growths, which turned out to be cutaneous lymphoma. We will first do palliative treatment so her loving owners can say goodbye to her.
