Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach uplifts the lives of dogs in the rural communities around Hoedspruit

Hoedspruit, South Africa’s wildlife haven, is surrounded by impoverished, rural communities, that have no access to government veterinary facilities for domestic animals. Since 2016, HALO (Hoedspruit AnimaL Outreach) has worked together with the local community leaders to improve the mental and physical health of domestic animals. Seven communities, The Willows, LeBoeng, Moraba, The Oaks, Tswenyan

e, Mulalani, Manoutsa are visited every month by HALO volunteers who offer free veterinary care and education to owners. To be involved or donate, please contact [email protected] or call +27 82 692 3688.

Meet Ethiel Sekgobela, our kennel assistant at our camp in the Oaks. Ethiel works together with Rushman, keeping our kennels clean, dogs fed and get their medication and organise the camp grounds. Ethiel is from Finale and loves dogs, his hope for HALO is to become a clinic for dogs in the communities to get the help they need. Let’s give Ethiel a 👍🏻 for his dedication and hard work

Buddy was surrendered to HALO this weekend and is now settling into a life off a heavy chain

As we were collecting dogs for our steri run this weekend, we came across Buddy who was tied on a chain not even 1 met long, no place for shade or shelter and a bucket of dirty water.

As we were talking to the owners on responsible pet ownership and the five freedoms and suggested sterilisation, they were more keen to surrender the dog “as he doesn’t do his job to bark”.

Sweet Buddy was quickly loaded and is now free to be just a dog in a safe environment while we find him a home who will love him for him.

Buddy is a young dog, submissive and will be sterilised this weekend.

Fox is settling into camp. This poor boy has one of the worst cases of papillomas we have seen in years, but we are determined to make it better! He is now slowly on solid food Hill’s Pet Nutrition which will make a huge difference and getting the right medication.

We have not received any donation for poor Fox yet, please consider a small donation to help us through as Fox will have to stay with us for quite a while ❤️

Last Saturday HALO had another stationary outreach at Mulalani. Thanks to World for Animals we were able to vaccinate all dogs against parvo and distemper and take in 10 dogs for sterilisation.

One dog came in with TVT and two dogs were surrendered for being unwanted. And one dog was taken in with severe papillomas.

Our stationary outreach is part of our rabies vaccination campaign, made possible by .

Battersea has been helping dogs and cats for over 160 years and has a long-term commitment to increase its impact for animals, not just at its rescue centres but across the UK and around the world. To achieve this Battersea works with other animal welfare organisations, delivering training through the Battersea Academy and providing funding through grants programme to help millions of dogs and cats.

Poor Fox has a severe case of papillomas, wart like tumors that are highly contagious among dogs and usually affect dogs that are already immune compromised. This is a particularly bad case as poor Fox is struggling to swallow and eat, due to the excessive papillomas on his tongue and palate. Luckily for Fox he can join our Snoopy in camp who also has papillomas. Fox is in quite poor condition so will take a while to recover as he is struggling to eat and swallow.

Can you help us pay for Fox’s treatment?

Meet Toben – The sweetest, smartest soul looking for his forever home

Toben had a rough start in life and was lucky enough to get into HALOs fostercare and is currently alternately fostered by Mittins and . Tabby wrote this description for him:

This special boy has been such a joy to foster, and we want to find him the best, most loving home he deserves. Toben is everything you could want in a young dog — quietly confident, house-trained, easy to train, and a social butterfly with other dogs. He’s currently attending puppy school and picking things up beautifully, walking nicely on a leash and mastering new skills.

Life hasn’t always been kind to him, and earlier rough handling left him extremely wary about being picked up or restrained. We’ve been working gently on this with positive training, and he’s made wonderful progress — he’s now much happier having a harness put on and continues to grow in confidence every day. To support this process and help him work through that early trauma, Toben is currently on a short course of anti-anxiety medication alongside his desensitization and counter-conditioning training.

Toben will thrive in a calm, patient home with other friendly dogs, where he can keep blossoming into the amazing companion he’s destined to be. If you’re looking for a loyal, low-maintenance friend with the brightest future ahead of him, this boy is waiting to meet you.

Toben is around 12 weeks old and up to date with his vaccinations and will be sterilised at 6 months of age. He has also lived in foster homes with young children and cats and is good with both too.

Bull, the cutest steri dog of the week

Little Bull, though small, had a very big personality and he loved running around the Willows, looking for girls. Let’s hope those days are now over with his snip sorted!

⭐️ Pixie transformation ⭐️

Look how much better little Pixie is doing! Our fosters really are the silent heroes of HALO, taking in pups that need some extra TLC. Christie and Ben from Kampersrus have done another stellar job with this pup and the transformation in 10 days is fantastic 👏🏻 HALO is grateful for your incredible support and hard work with all pups 🙏🏻

💛 A Call for Compassion: Supporting Rushman’s Family 💛

Earlier this year, the sister of our hardworking kennel assistant and ambulance driver Rushman passed away tragically. She leaves behind three young children — a boy of 10 years old and 6-year-old twins (a boy and a girl).

These little ones now live with Rushman’s mother and are in urgent need of basic essentials. Rushman, who already works tirelessly for HALO on a small stipend, is doing everything he can — but he needs our community’s support.

🧺 Items Needed:
Children’s clothing
Shoes (sizes 5, 11, and 12)
School uniforms
Food parcels
Personal hygiene products
Toys

If you’re able to help in any way — through donations of goods or funds — it will make a world of difference to this family during such a difficult time.

📍 Donations can be dropped off at the HALO camp in The Oaks, or you can contact us directly to arrange collection or contribution via 064 6138441.

Together, let’s show Rushman and his family that the Hoedspruit community stands with them — just as Rushman stands for every animal in need. 💚

🌿Strengthening bonds with the local tribal authorities at the Oaks🌿

A successful NGO has strong bonds with the local roots of the communities they work in so keeping our relations with the local tribal authorities strong is very important to HALO. From discussing problems to raising awareness on rabies or our vaccination and sterilisation program, we keep in direct communication.

Today we had another meeting, this time for a new initiative we are launching soon. We hope to share you the outcomes soon!

🥰Lacy made it safely to Pretoria!🥰

Our sweet old girl Lacy has found her best forever home. And it sure was a team effort. After well over 400 shares (thanks to everyone who did!) Yolande Van Heerden Theron saw the post and responded willing to adopt her.

She previously lived in Hoedspruit and is now based in Pretoria so the next challenge was to get Lacy there. And then the wonderful Beverly Cosslett offered to take her there. Shame, poor Lacy didn’t travel too well, but she made it there safely and after a much needed bath has settled in on her blanky and following new mom wherever she goes ❤️

A huge thanks to everyone involved, you are real life savers for Lacy ☘️
