🐾 A Second Chance for Tubby Els 🐾

Meet Tubby Els, a brave little fighter who recently came to Maroela Animal Hospital with a suspected lymphoma affecting a very delicate area on his nose. What started as a concerning lesion quickly became something that needed urgent and skilled intervention.

Thanks to the exceptional work of Dr Liesel Schreiber, Tubby underwent a delicate surgical procedure to remove the tumor. Operating in such a sensitive area is never simple, but with precision, care, and dedication, the nosectomy was a success.

Today, Tubby is on the road to recovery and has been given a second chance at a more comfortable, normal life 💛

Cases like this remind us just how important early intervention and skilled veterinary care can be. We’re so happy for Tubby and his family.

⚠️ Spitting Cobras & Your Pets – What You Need to Know 🐍🐶🐱

We’ve recently seen an increase in spitting cobra encounters in our area. These snakes don’t need to bite to cause harm — they can spray venom directly into your pet’s eyes from a distance.

👁 What happens if your pet is spat at?

Spitting cobra venom causes:
• Immediate and intense eye pain
• Squinting or tightly closed eyes
• Redness and swelling
• Excessive tearing
• Potential corneal ulcers or permanent damage if untreated

🚨 What to do IMMEDIATELY:
• Flush the eyes continuously with clean water or saline for at least 10–15 minutes. The more you flush, the better.
• Seek veterinary care
• Prompt treatment can mean the difference between temporary irritation and lasting eye damage.

If you see a snake, keep pets away and contact a professional snake handler. Please do not attempt to catch or kill the snake.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed, please contact us immediately. Quick action saves sight.

🏡🍖Levi’s Story – Please Keep Your Bins Secure🍖🏡

Meet Levi, a beautiful, friendly Pitbull with a big personality and an even bigger appetite.

A few weeks ago, Levi had to undergo emergency surgery after eating rubbish. What may seem like “just a little bin raiding” turned into a life-threatening situation that required immediate intervention. Levi was admitted to the hospital for observation but when his symptoms continued to get worse, Dr Liesel knew she had to take him straight to theatre. The rubbish that Levi ate managed to get stuck in a few places along his intestinal tract and were causing a blockage. Thankfully, his first surgery went well and he was on the road to recovery.

But Levi wasn’t out of danger yet.

Despite his owners keeping a very close eye on him, Levi managed to tear open his stitches at home, which caused a hernia. This meant he had to go back into theatre for a second emergency surgery.

Two surgeries.
Two anaesthetics.
Two recoveries.

Dogs don’t understand the danger of bones, plastic, packaging, spoiled food, or foreign objects. What smells like treasure to them can quickly become a medical emergency.

Levi has fully recovered again, and we are hopeful he will continue to improve. He comes by to visit the clinic nearly everyday and we are very happy to see that he is back to his old self!

🐾 Community Spotlight 🐾

We at Maroela Animal Hospital would like to give a massive shout-out to Dr Jamie Traynor for her incredible dedication and compassion 💙

Dr Jamie generously gave up her personal time and, together with the amazing Greater Kruger Alley Cat Initiative, successfully sterilised 29 feral cats in Nelspruit. This is no small feat – it’s hands-on work that makes a real, lasting difference to animal welfare and community health.

We are so proud to work alongside organisations who go above and beyond to create positive change for animals who need it most. Thank you, Dr Jamie, and thank you to Greater Kruger Alley Cats for the ongoing work you do. Thank you to Alley Cat Rescue for funding this amazing project!👏
