Our shelter is running low on dog treats for our furry friends in the back🐾

We go through boxes of treats every week due to making enrichment treats- and just passing them out when cleaning kennels💜

If you have any extra treats laying around you no longer need we would love for you to drop them off at our adoption center🩷 you can also visit our Amazon wish list to see what else we need at the link below.

Yesterday we had another long term resident finally find their furrever home✨

Everyone say congratulations to Hopper and his new family🩷

Hopper came to us back in February of 2023 from the Lower Valley. This boy spent many many months in our shelter before he was adopted for a brief time. Unfortunately they had to return him to due some issues with their cat. He was a staff favorite for events, social outings and just some love💜

The time is finally right for this guy as he is going to a home with no other animals or small children. We wish Hopper well on his new journey and life out of the shelter. We all know this boy deserves it❤️

✨Friday Feels!✨

This friday we would like to introduce to your our amazing Medical Coordinator Monica Aquino!!

Monica came to work for YHS back in October of 2021 and started out as a Kennel Technician. Monica worked everywhere from Large Dogs, Small Dogs and Cats, although her favorite place to be was in the cattery🐈‍⬛

In April of 2022 she was offered the position of Medical Coordinator where she has been since! Monica loves animals and helping those who don't have a voice to help themselves🫶🏻 You can always find her fostering animals with medical issues or those who just need a little extra love. She is fantastic with the scared and nervous animals and treats them all with the love and care that they deserve🩵

Monica adopted Prince who is pictured with her in the first photo in February of 2023 after foster failing on him🩷

✨Adoption Update!✨

CeCe, a 1-year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix was brought to the adoption center in early November after being tied to a pole with a phone cord at an elementary school in the lower valley💔

Cece was picked up by animal control and taken to the shelter. When she first arrived she wasnt a fan of the leash but with a little encouragment would do ok, She also love attention and just snuggling up with her handler🥰

Cece was adopted in late November and here is what her adopters have to say about her🫶🏻;
"We adopted Cece a month ago. We have been planning for a dog for a couple months after we bought our house and stopped by the shelter on a whim one day when we were in Yakima Christmas shopping. We saw Cece and had to take her on a walk and spend some time with her. We instantly fell in love. We drove back home to Ellensburg that day knowing we weren’t quite ready because our yard wasn’t fully fenced in. We couldn’t forget her and decided later that night we were going to adopt her and finished our fence the next day so we could bring her home after her spay appointment. We are so glad we decided to bring her home. She is the sweetest girl and has really come out of her shell. She loves snuggling on the bed and couch, going for drives up in the hills and playing in the snow, going on all the walks, socializing with other dogs, and getting new chew toys. She is such a sweet soul we are so thankful for the opportunity to adopt❤️"

First picture is her photo for adoption and the rest have been submitted by her wonderful family!

If you have an adoption story you would like featured you can email your story to [email protected]

At our Fur Ball this past October, eighteen amazing donors pledged a special gift to help us build a brand new community cat room and catio at the YHS Adoption Center! We are excited to announce that this big project is officially underway! The Catio will allow us to rescue more cats while also improving the quality of their housing thanks to this free roaming setup.

Throughout the planning process, we have added some enhancements to the project, all in an effort to improve the quality and capacity. For anyone looking to help support this project, that the eighteen generous Fur Ball pledges started, please consider donating via our page or at our website - https://yakimahumane.networkforgood.com/. Make a notation that your donation is for the Catio and we'll apply the funds accordingly.

We are excited to continue to make long overdue improvements to our shelter thanks to the support of our outstanding community. Thank you!

This month we would like to highlight an amazing foster that has been with us since July 2022✨🩵

Piper Richmond has fostered 19 animals since starting her foster journey, and has foster failed on two kittens and two puppies🩷. We asked Piper what are some things she loves about fostering and here is her statement:

"Having kids wasn't in the cards for me and my husband, so fostering enables me to use my nurturing instincts to help shape the young lives of these critters. I really hope that I am giving them a good foundation with potty training and socialization. Plus, when you work from home, the constant stream of baby animals is a real serotonin hit, and makes every day interesting! I have not fostered sick or injured animals yet, but I am blessed to have the time and space to do so in the future. The Yakima Humane Society provides supplies, food, and basic veterinary care in order to allow me to focus on setting these fur babies up for success in their future adoptive homes.

Naches has been with us since December 29th 2022- he just hit his year mark in the shelter and we are so hoping this handsome boy can get a home before the next holiday🩷

Naches is a 3 year old Husky mix who loves everyone🩵 he has such a goofy personality and will talk to get your attention. This boy loves to play on our off leash area so we are hoping for a secure yard where he can run and play🫶🏻

Visit our shelter today to meet Naches or take him out on a walk. We are open Monday thru Saturday from 10am to 5pm with a quiet hour and lunch of 12:30-1:30 that we are closed for. You can visit our website at YakimaHumane.org to learn more about him and other adoptable dogs.

✨Tidbit Tuesday✨

Every Tuesday we will be showing the statistics of our adoptions and intakes at our shelter!

Red is here with last weeks adoption report! A total of 31 animals were adopted out into their furrever homes,

Red a 3 year old Pointer mix is also looking for her new home. She came to us in October thin and nervous of all the stuff going on at shelter. It appeared that whatever she had been through previously, she didnt get much love. Since being at the adoption center this girl has done amazing, She loves treats and will sit for them. You can catch her laying on her kuranda bed when in the kennel but she also enjoys getting out for some time in the play yard.

Red would make an amazing companion to any family with almost any lifestyle and we are hoping that she finds her furrever home this week!

✨🐾Friday Feels🐾✨

This morning we would like to introduce to you one of our front desk staff- Matthew Lewis💜

Matthew came to work for YHS back in 2020 and had a hybrid Animal Control/Kennel Technician position until 2021 when City of Yakima Animal Control was handed off to the City from YHS.🐾At that point Matthew became a full time kennel technician. In 2023 Matthew was moved up to work front desk where he currently resides.

Matthew adopted our shelter cat Cheddar back in December of 2022🫶🏻- Cheddar started out as our Clinic House Cat after he was dropped off the shelter in May of 2020. He was left in a carrier with food and water bowls and no owner in sight. Due to his quirky personality he stayed as the Clinic/Shelter house cat until him and Matthew formed and unbreakable bond❤️ Matthew decided to bring Cheddar home and give him a life out of the shelter- where he gets constant affection, attention, and is spoiled rotten.

🥰What a lucky cat🥰

✨Tidbit Tuesday✨

Every Tuesday we will be showing the statistics of our adoptions and intakes at our shelter🐾

Gunner is here with last week's adoption report. A grand total of 30 animals were adopted last week and he is hoping to become a part of the adopted club this week🫶🏻

Gunner is a 2-year-old male Husky mix with a cool personality. Gunner loves getting out in the park and is a talkative chap. He wants an adopter that wants a conversationalist and finds Husky drama to be amusing. Gunner was trotting along and didn't realize we had stopped and when he hit the end of the leash he absolutely flopped on the ground and rolled around, making sure we were watching to know how much we had inconvenienced him. Once we tugged and told him we were walking in a new direction all perceived slights were forgotten and he was ready to explore again! Learn more about Gunner and other adoptable dogs at https://yakimahumane.org/adopt/dogs/

We wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to all❤️🫶🏻

Our shelter had a special guest stop by… Santa had to come say hi to all the good pups in our care🐾🎄 (This year Santa didn’t have any of our dogs on the naughty list and he said they were all good pups and ready for their furrever homes)

A reminder that we will be closed today and tomorrow in observance of the Holidays but will open back up on Tuesday December 26th at 10am🫶🏻

✨🫶🏻Friday Feels🫶🏻✨

Today we would like to introduce you to our transfer coordinator Rachel Vincent🩷

Rachel started out as a volunteer in 2018 before she was hired on as staff in 2019 due to her amazing work as a volunteer. In 2019 she also won volunteer of the year award at our annual Fur Ball Gala✨

Rachel started out as a kennel tech before moving to front desk. In 2021 she adopted the adorable cat below named Sassy Pants and also pictured with them is their dog buddy whom they rescued out of Toppen*sh many years back. They also have a dog named Lana whom they adopted from Wags to Riches🩵

This year Rachel was added the title transfer coordinator when KP was promoted to shelter manager. This means every week she puts together a list of all of our animals in the shelter and sends them out to different rescues and shelters across the state and surrounding state to get more transfers or adoptions🐾

Join us today at PetSmart in Union Gap from 11am to 2pm and visit Mr. Blue and Hopper✨✨

These two awesome dogs have been in the shelter for some time and are looking to find placement in their furrever home before the holidays✨🎄

Meet Mr. Blue, a 3-year-old male Husky/Pit mix. Mr. Blue came to us from Animal Control after he was caught wandering around the neighbor hood multiple times. Unfortunately his owners did not want to keep him due to him being to friendly and wandering around too much. He is a very active dog who enjoys getting out of the kennel for a walk and an adventure. He is a typical husky mix who loves to talk to you and be apart of the conversation.

Meet Hopper, a 4-year-old male Akita/Shepherd mix.
Hopper has a very solid and confident build but his personality doesn't currently match. He can lack confidence with new people but is quick to find himself and become outgoing and bonded once in a home. Hopper might look like a muscle man but he was easy to handle and one of the adoption centers favorites. He is a staff favorite to take out to events and just to cuddle up with and love.

Other available dogs are listed on our website at https://yakimahumane.org/adopt/dogs/

Today we would like to highlight an amazing foster family that has been with us since February 2023✨🩵

The Stentz Family has fostered 34 animals since starting their foster journey🫶🏻🐾

We asked Stacy what are some things she loves about fostering and here is her statement:

"Things we love about fostering? Oh lord what's not to love? We get all the puppy cuddles and occasional kitten snuggles without the long term commitment. Not to mention giving them a head start on kennel training, potty training, leash training, being around kids, other dogs, and cats. Hopefully what we do for them in the short time we have them helps them stay in their adopted homes forever. But we have foster-failed 2x soooo..... That long term commitment ain't to bad! Haha!"

You can apply to be a foster today at https://yakimahumane.org/get-involved/foster/

Many of you many know this handsome face as Squints a 3 year old husky mix✨

Squints was at our shelter for close to a year, repeatedly getting overlooked, before he was adopted out.

Unfortunately, the adopter reached back out to us over a month after adoption and informed us that their complex didn’t allow dogs. By that time the return policy had expired and we were over capacity for dogs, so we provided the adopter with the resources we could to help them rehome Squints or keep him as an ESA🐾

A week or so later Squints was found roaming the streets and all attempted contact with the owner was unsuccessful; this landed Squints back at the shelter which he was all too familiar with. We are determined that his next home will be forever🫶🏻

The kind person that brought Squints to us said he was great with kids and fine in the bath🩵Squints will jump a fence that isn’t “Husky Proof” so we recommend supervised time outside until you can say for sure that Squints won’t figure a way out, this is normal for pretty much all Huskies as they can be little escape artists when bored✨
Squints really enjoys going out for walks and playing with toys. Once Squints gets some energy out of him in the first few minutes he settles down and walks great on a leash for having little to no leash work. He does well with other dogs but true to his Husky nature he would do best in a home without cats🐾

Squints is a lovebug of a dog whom staff adore and our Event Manager loves to take on field trips. His last trip was at the Selah Lighted Parade where him and a few other shelter dogs walked the lighted parade dressed up all festive. Come down to our Shelter today to visit this sweet boy and maybe give him a chance at his furrever home🩷✨

We are open Monday Thru Saturday from 10am to 5pm and we are closed from 12:30 to 1:30pm for lunch and quiet hour.

Meet Carol, this 10 month old Pitbull Shepherd mix came to us in October from Zillah and is the sweetest girl.

Carol loves to crawl up in your lap and get belly rubs and affection, but also enjoys getting outside and running around.

She took a field trip to Main Street Coffee and Union Gap City Hall where she was the perfect companion. She loved her pup cup and waited eagerly for the coffee lady to share it with her.

Carol says at roughly 40lbs she is the perfect size for anything. She makes a great travel companion for adventures and she is ready to go home today🩷

Visit our website today to read more about her and fill out an adoption application or come down the the shelter Monday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm. We are closed from 12:30pm to 1:30pm for lunch and quiet hour.

✨🫶🏻Friday Feels🫶🏻✨

For the next several weeks we will be posting our staff and their animals so you can get to know the people working with the animas in our shelter on a daily basis🐾

To start off we would like to introduce our Shelter Manager Kelli Peal🩵

Many of you many know Miss Kelli or "KP" from the News every Wednesday Night on KIMA featuring some of our adorable adoptable dogs.

KP started out in 2005 as an Animal Control Officer for YHS but went to front desk shortly after. During her time at YHS she started up the Transfer Program and started doing offsite events. Kelli had two beautiful daughters in December of 2012 and took a long break, until her kids went into kindergarten. At that point in 2019 Miss Peal came back to work with YHS as the transfer and adoption coordinator, but behavioralist quickly became apart of that roll. In 2023 she was offered the position of Shelter Manager to which she accepted.

Kelli has a Manchester Terrier named Buzz whom she adopted from YHS when she first came back to work in 2019. Buzz Alfred has since been an amazing family dog and a great addition to the shelter. KP will bring Buzz into work with her to help some of the more timid and unsocialized dogs feel more comfortable. In bringing Buzz in they open up a bit more and he is also great for dog testing.

Well after 360 days Gordo finally did it… he found a furrever home❤️✨

Yesterday was the happiest of days as the adoption center watched their second longest resident leave the building🥰

Gordo was brought to us in December of 2022 and was 4 days away from hitting one year🥺 now he gets to spend his birthday and the holidays in a home where he will be spoiled and loved just as he deserves.

Thank you to the amazing adopters who gave this big guy a chance and to all the other adopters who come in and give our larger, longer residents a chance🫶🏻

Happiest of Holidays everyone❤️🥰

We had two adoptions that just warmed the heart of staff. Today we would like to highlight Dixie and her new family🩵

We would like to wish Dixie and her new family a happy and joyous life🩷

Late Adoption Post buuuut Zeus was adopted!

He came to us the end of October from Animal Control and was a well mannered dog for the most part. He would get happy feet when you took him out for walks, and due to his excitement of being out of the kennel his leash manners were lacking a bit. But we are so glad this family took a chance on this happy goober.

Zeus looked like he won the lottery and let’s be honest- he really did with such an amazing family. We wish Zeus and his new family a lifetime of love and joy❤️
