❗Important Update Regarding Emergency Services❗

As you may have already heard, Yakima Pet Emergency Services will be closing permanently after the 1st of the year.

EMERGENCIES:
Due to our caseload and dedication to caring for our established patients, we generally can only accommodate emergencies for established clients.

AFTER HOURS EMERGENCIES:
We do not currently have an after-hours on-call system in Yakima. Dr. Lust may be reached by phone to triage care and decide if an emergency warrants immediate attention. Often these can be scheduled for the next day. He will not answer his phone directly, due to the sheer number of calls. Please leave a message. After-hours care is for established clients only. You still may be directed to a 24-hour emergency service depending on the severity of the emergency.

DURING BUSINESS HOURS:
We offer several urgent care slots for our established clients every day. Often these slots fill up by late morning, so call early if you have an urgent care concern.
We charge an urgent care exam fee for these slots. If your pet has an immediate life-threatening condition, we will make every possible effort to provide the care you need.

SATURDAYS:
At this time, our Saturday appointments are reserved for routine appointments only. We have limited staff and hours available on the weekend. We will try to accommodate urgent care appointments, but those will be accepted only on a case-by-case basis.

24 HOUR EMERGENCY HOSPITALS:
As of January 1, 2024 the Yakima Pet Emergency Service has closed. This leaves the next closest facility in Pasco, at Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency.
There may be cases in which we may need to transfer a pet with a serious condition from our hospital to a 24-hour facility, if the pet’s condition is unstable or requires overnight monitoring. Our veterinary hospital is not staffed overnight.

It’s in Washington State now. But none in Yakima that we’re aware of. But we’re watching. Please take the precautions to limit your pet’s exposure to other dogs of questionable travel or health status.

Drug research is bringing us some amazing drugs got our companion dogs and cats. This is a great article on some of the drugs. We currently have Cytopoint, an allergy drug available for dogs and Solensia and Librela, osteoarthritis injections available Feb or both cats and dogs. Don’t be afraid to ask us about them.

More than 100 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) designed to bind to specific target proteins are available for humans, including those intended to treat cancer and autoimmune disorders. The power of mAbs is now being unleashed for debilitating diseases in dogs and cats, including atopic dermatitis, pain a...

We still don’t have any confirmation of cases in Washington State, but they are working hard to get it pinned down. A specific cause has yet to be determined but it appears to be a contagious infection, and not the normal “Kennel Cough”. It doesn’t appear to be Canine Influenza, Bordetella or Covid. A common bacterial infection called Mycoplasma has been identified in a few sick dogs but at this point it doesn’t appear to be the cause of the breakout. As more news comes out, we’ll keep you informed.

Veterinarian Dr. Jessica Prewitt says they made the call to close the shelter and quarantine after 80% of the dogs got sick.

A few days ago I posted a reference to the compassion and care that was provided to the Military Working Dog K9 Rosso by Jason Johnson and his nonprofit organization Project K-9 Hero. This video provides an exceptional description of Military and ATF working dogs and is narrated by Jason Johnson, the heart and soul of Project K9 Hero. “Rosso” has since passed, but was one of the great canine protection animals of our country. Please take a few minutes to watch this video. It has been amazingly well done.

A few years ago, MWD Rosso and I were featured in this highly professional documentary on “Explosive Detection Dogs” with Prodogtv! Up until now, it was never released to the public. However, in light of his passing yesterday I have been given the green light to share it with the world! THIS IS A MUST WATCH VIDEO! -

Thanks Project K-9 Hero and Jason Johnson for the care you provided this Veteran! “Rosso” served our country well.

I’m so proud to be able to help this organization in their activities. On Veterans Day it’s even a little more special. Please take some time to watch the reunion of Military Working Dog (MWD) Blek as he’s reconnected with his handler after 3 1/2 years. Our organization- Project K9 Hero will be covering all care and medical expenses for the rest of Blek’s life. A big thank you needs to go out to Military Veteran Jason Johnson and his organization Project K9 Hero.

Staff Sgt. Thomas Watkins reunited with Blek, a now-retired military dog whom he used to handle at a duty station.
