What does it mean to be a Calais-Certified Therapy Dog & Handler Team?

It means developing a deeper understanding of your dog, your role as a handler and the environment in which you’ll work.

It means being prepared to recognize your dog’s needs, understand student and school considerations, establish appropriate boundaries and make thoughtful decisions in the moment.

Most importantly, it means approaching Animal Assisted Interventions with intention, purpose and responsibility.

Calais-Certification is about building teams that are prepared to make a meaningful impact—while respecting the welfare of everyone involved.

When a therapy dog enters a school environment, it’s not just about what the dog can do for students.

It’s about understanding what the dog is communicating, what they need, what they enjoy, what they can handle—and when they’ve had enough.

Animal Assisted Interventions done with intention starts with the relationship between dog and handler.

The better we understand our dogs, the better we can advocate for them—and the students they are there to support.

That’s part of The Calais Method.

Learn about this and more through our elearning course. This course is the first step to becoming a Calais-Certified Therapy dog/hander team. https://www.thecalaismethod.com/purchase-course/p/3rgal3wxxqqdqmtcfh807a30dmqu9d-8at85

🐾 A therapy dog is not a reward. Not a mascot. And not simply there to make students feel good.

When therapy dogs are integrated into schools with intention, training, and accountability, they can become meaningful partners in learning and therapeutic programming.

That means looking beyond the dog’s presence and considering the entire therapy dog/handler team—how they are trained, how interactions are structured, how student outcomes are considered, and how the dog’s welfare is protected.

At The Calais Method, we believe this distinction matters. When we start recognizing them as instructional and therapeutic partners, we elevate the work—and the impact.

We need to reframe therapy dogs not as rewards or novelties, but as respected educational partners. They must be a part of a carefully designed intervention that demands the same level of professionalism as any other educational strategy.

🐾 A therapy dog and handler are a team—and both matter.

A common misconception about therapy dog certification is that it’s primarily about evaluating the dog. But a successful therapy dog team is more than a great dog. It’s the connection, communication, knowledge, and partnership between the dog and handler that make the team effective.

At The Calais Method, we empower therapy dog and handler teams with the knowledge and skills to work together safely, intentionally, and confidently in a school environment. Our eLearning course helps handlers build a strong foundation in therapy dog welfare, ethics, safety, intentional interactions, and thoughtful integration into schools—because supporting the dog is just as important as understanding the role of the handler.

Your dog brings something special to the team. ❤️ We help you build the knowledge and skills to bring that partnership into the school setting with intention.

A therapy dog interaction at The Calais School might look like a student spending a few quiet minutes with a dog.

But what you don't see may be the reason behind the interaction.

For one student, it may be an opportunity to practice social communication.

For another, it may support regulation before returning to class.

For another, the dog may become part of a reading activity or therapeutic intervention.

The interaction may look simple.

The intention behind it isn't.

The whole team matters.

Would you expect a therapeutic intervention to be provided without appropriate training, preparation, and safety considerations? Probably not.

The same thoughtful approach applies to Animal Assisted Interventions in schools. A wonderful therapy dog is an important part of the equation—but effective, responsible work also requires a well-prepared handler, an understanding of the students being served, clear boundaries, safety protocols, and intentional implementation.

At The Calais Method, we believe in looking at the whole picture: the dog, the handler, the environment, the student, and the purpose behind each interaction.

There are many respected approaches to therapy dog and handler training. What matters is that teams are thoughtfully prepared to work safely, ethically, and intentionally within the school environment.

Because good intentions matter.
But meaningful outcomes require preparation, purpose, and a methodology behind the work.

Good intentions are a starting point—not a methodology.

What does it actually take to become a Calais-Certified Therapy Dog Handler?

It starts with education.

The Calais Method certification begins with our comprehensive eLearning course, followed by in-person Skills Training.

Together, these two components prepare handler teams to understand not only how to work with a therapy dog, but when, why, and how to do so intentionally and ethically in a school environment.

Education first. Practice next. Impact follows.

It's easy to see a dog in a school and think, "That's nice. The kids must love it."

And they probably do. ❤️🐾

But intentional Animal Assisted Interventions go much deeper.

A professional approach considers:
• The student's needs
• The goal of the interaction
• The dog's welfare
• Safety and boundaries
• Handler skills
• Appropriate implementation
• How the interaction fits into the student's broader support plan

That's the difference between simply having a therapy dog and intentionally integrating Animal Assisted Interventions into a school setting.
