Why does the emergency vet feel so different from your regular veterinarian?

If you’ve ever wondered why your pet waited at the ER while another patient was rushed back, or why it can be difficult to get a same-day callback from a veterinary specialist, there’s an important reason: veterinary emergency medicine is built around medical urgency… not first come, first served.

Emergency veterinarians and veterinary specialists are constantly triaging patients, treating life-threatening emergencies, caring for hospitalized pets, and managing packed schedules. Every decision is made with one goal in mind: getting the sickest animals the care they need as quickly as possible.

Your patience truly helps veterinary teams focus on what matters most, saving lives ❤️

It’s called time management

A lot of people are reading this article and assuming it’s about veterinary corporate consolidators, but that’s not actually what’s happening.

This story is about the proposed MWI and Covetrus merger, which is being reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) under standard antitrust procedures. A process that happens whenever large companies merge.

What concerns me more are the unsupported claims buried in the article…

Saying “some people” can’t afford veterinary care without providing any context or data doesn’t help anyone. Access to care has always been a challenge, and conversations about it deserve facts… not vague statements.

And the claim that the average dog or cat costs $35,000 over its lifetime? That would require a CRAZY series of medical issues for most pets. While some animals absolutely do have complex, expensive medical journeys, that is not the typical experience for the average pet owner.

As veterinarians, we should be educating pet owners with accurate information. Not sensational headlines that create unnecessary fear about the cost of veterinary care.

Three huskies barking, an emergency rolling in, a frustrated client on the phone… max overstimulation 😩

So… the dog DOES have allergies…? 🤨
