🎆 Fireworks season is here! While celebrations can be fun for people, they can be stressful for our pets.

If your furry family members are sensitive to loud noises, a little preparation can go a long way:

🐾 Keep pets indoors when fireworks are expected
🐾 Create a quiet, comfortable space where they can relax
🐾 Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up to date
🐾 Watch for signs of anxiety, such as pacing, panting, trembling, or hiding

If your pet has struggled during fireworks in the past, our team is happy to discuss ways to help them feel more comfortable, including calming techniques and medication options when appropriate.

We're excited to introduce one of the newest faces at Grand Avenue Veterinary Hospital — Jomar, Veterinary Assistant!

Jomar recently graduated from East High School in 2025 and is currently attending Iowa State University, where he's studying Animal Science on the pre-veterinary track with a minor in Biology.

Although this is his first position in the veterinary field, his passion for animals started long ago. Jomar has spent much of his life caring for and raising animals, and he's driven by a desire to help pets and their families live happier, healthier lives

This week, our Practice Manager, Troy Lyons, had the opportunity to attend a leadership retreat with Heartland Veterinary Partners—and what an incredible experience it was!

From learning new strategies to strengthen our hospital, to connecting with other leaders across the Heartland family, the retreat was filled with valuable insights, inspiration, and ideas that will help us continue providing exceptional care to our patients, clients, and team members.

📢 Rabies Vaccination: What Every Pet Owner Should Know

Many pet owners are surprised to learn that Iowa law and local city ordinances are not exactly the same when it comes to rabies vaccination.

✅ Iowa law requires all dogs 6 months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies.

✅ In many Des Moines Metro communities—including Des Moines, West Des Moines, Johnston, and other surrounding cities—current rabies vaccination is also required for pet licensing and local ordinance compliance for both dogs and cats.

Why does this matter?

🐾 Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop.
🐾 Rabies can be transmitted from animals to people.
🐾 Indoor pets are still at risk, especially from bats.
🐾 Current rabies vaccination can prevent lengthy quarantines and costly consequences if your pet is exposed to wildlife or involved in a bite incident.
