Iowa Veterinary Specialties is a 24 hour emergency hospital and a specialty referral practice. We have mulltiple board-certified veterinarians including a surgeon, internal medicine specialist, and dermatologist. In addition to these departments, we have oncology, dental, and radiology services.

Thankful Thursday!🐾

Wyatt, a 14-week-old, English Mastiff came to IVS after ingesting steel wool about 24 hours earlier. After vomiting and passing pieces of steel wool in his stool, Wyatt's family brought him in to get checked out.

Dr. Shivapour and the team took abdominal radiographs and found no evidence of metallic steel wool fragments remaining in Wyatt's gastrointestinal tract. Lucky boy!

Wyatt's family reports that he is doing great after his unexpected adventure, and we're so glad to hear it. Thank you, Joel for the incredibly kind words and for trusting us with your sweet boy!💙

Dr. Fertig brings more than two decades of experience in emergency and critical care medicine, veterinary education, and organizational leadership to IVS.

With a leadership philosophy centered on clarity, communication, and accountability, Dr. Fertig is passionate about supporting veterinary teams, strengthening clinical standards, and building strong relationships with our referring community.

She also has a long history of collaboration with Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Fertig looks forward to further strengthening IVS's partnership with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to help train the next generation of veterinarians.

On Tuesday night, sweet Ivy presented to our hospital after developing a serious complication following her spay surgery earlier in the day. She arrived with an open abdomen and needed immediate care.

Dr. Greenfield quickly took Ivy to surgery for an emergency abdominal exploratory. After surgery she was hospitalized and closely monitored on IV fluids, pain medications, and antibiotics into the following day.

We're so grateful we could be there when Ivy needed us most, and we're thrilled this lucky girl was able to head home to continue her recovery with her family.

We're wishing Ivy lots of rest, cuddles, and continued healing!💙🐾
