🌱 It Started With a Seed 🌱

I want to be transparent about where donations to Mabel’s Misfits go. Every dollar raised so far has been used directly for animal care, including veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, feed, and housing for rescued animals.

Now we’re ready to launch our next big project: raising $2,000 to create custom Mabel’s Misfits wildflower seed packets that will help fund and launch our new online membership community.

Members will receive native wildflower seeds and gain access to a platform where they can share their wildlife gardens, learn how to attract pollinators and native species, track wildlife sightings, and connect with others who want to make a difference for nature.

Our goal is to inspire people of all ages to create wildlife-friendly spaces, whether that’s a single flowerpot or an entire backyard habitat. The revenue generated through memberships will help support animal rescue efforts, community projects, educational programs, and future wildlife habitat initiatives.

We’ve been building this vision since last year, and we’re so close to launching. If you’d like to help us grow something that benefits both animals and the environment, please consider donating or sharing this post.

The mess in your yard this month wasn't mess. It was habitat with tenants.

The orb weaver's web on the porch railing — trapped flies and gnats all month. The paper wasp nest on the far eave — the colony picked hornworms off your tomatoes before you noticed them. The rock pile by the shed — a garter snake moved into the gaps and started hunting slugs.

🌿 The parsley and dill you let go leggy — black swallowtail caterpillars striped every stem. You would have pulled the plants a week before the butterflies emerged.

The windfall apples you didn't rake — red admirals landed and drank from the fermenting fruit. The bee balm you didn't deadhead — a hummingbird kept returning to the spent flowers long after you'd written them off.

The slug pellets you skipped — a toad showed up and handled it.

Every messy corner had something living in it. The web you didn't sweep. The fruit you didn't clear. The stems you didn't cut.

The yard knew what to do with all of it 🐾

You've been blaming the mole for the dead plants. She didn't touch them. She can't — wrong teeth, wrong digestive system. She eats grubs, earthworms, and beetle larvae. One hundred percent animal protein. Not a single root, bulb, or tuber.

The animal eating your roots is a vole. She's smaller, mouse-like, with round ears and small paws. She runs in surface trails through the grass — and she uses the mole's tunnels as highways to reach your plants underground.

🌿 The mole has large front paws built for digging, a pointed snout, and no visible eyes. She lives entirely underground. The ridges in the lawn are her hunting tunnels — she's chasing grubs through the soil, not chewing roots.

The vole is the one chewing roots, bulbs, and bark. She's the one girdling the base of young trees in winter. She looks like a mouse and lives at the surface.

Two animals. One blamed. One guilty. The diagnostic is simple — large paws and no eyes underground equals mole. Mouse-like and surface trails in the grass equals vole.

The mole was innocent. The vole did it 🐾

We raised $933 dollars at the Waxhaw Earth day event this past Saturday!

Thank you to everyone who showed up and entered our raffles, played games and listened to our vision!
This money will help us towards our latest mission! To conquer Waxhaw and have a misfit in every home, school, business and store so that we can help our community and wildlife in so many ways!

✨ Huge shoutout to Haley at Greenhand Gardens! 🌿💚

We are beyond grateful for Haley and her husband, who run their incredible plant nursery and outdoor services right off 75 as you head into Monroe from Waxhaw. Haley generously donated so many beautiful plants for our wildlife garden at Mabel’s Misfits, including hostas, butterfly bushes, irises, daylilies, jasmine, and so many other amazing native pollinators!

Not only did she provide the plants, but she also shared a wealth of knowledge, guidance, and thoughtful recommendations that will help our garden truly thrive. 🌸🐝

Greenhand Gardens is an absolute gem, with an abundance of plants and access to over 500 varieties of indoor and outdoor plants. They offer everything from landscape design and installation to maintenance, drainage, irrigation, lighting, edible landscaping, raised beds, ponds, water features, and so much more. They even provide horticulture classes, plant diagnostics, pest control, stump grinding… truly a one-stop shop for all things outdoor and growing!

We can’t wait to watch our garden grow and give back by sharing seeds with our community in the future. 🌱

Get your hummingbird feeders clean and ready!

Create simple, affordable and safe hummingbird nectar by mixing one part white granulated sugar with four parts water.

Boil the water to dissolve the sugar easily, then cool completely before filling feeders. Never use red dye, honey, or organic sugar, as these can harm the birds.

Make sure to change your nectar at least once a week. Nectar spoils and old nectar can make the Hummingbirds very sick. Hummingbirds will also remember where they had a bad dining experience and won't come back! But if they give you a 5 🌟 review, they'll remember your nectar restaurant year after year, and will bring their friends back with them!

Just remember Hummingbirds don't like to share so if you notice your 'restaurant' is booming, put out more feeders so all of your customers are happy! 🌺
