We can’t believe Rue’s still with us. She’s a sweet, 6-7 month old hound mix who’s dog, cat and kid friendly! She’s house trained, walks great on leash and loves to cuddle. This pretty girl shouldn’t be growing up in rescue - she deserves a forever family!

We can’t rescue our way out of the current animal welfare crisis. It starts at a community level - education, outreach and accessible resources. We recognize the importance of this, which is why we’re incredibly excited to partner with Chesterfield County Animal Shelter, offering assistance to pet owners in an area with very few resources.

Community assistance programs play a vital role in reducing overpopulation and helping owners who may not be able to afford veterinary care otherwise. As sponsors, our support will allow the shelter to provide affordable spay/neuter services and rabies vaccines to community pets.

•The cost to sponsor a community pet is $50
•Each clinic day can serve ~25 animals
•Our goal is to raise $1,250 by the next clinic on June 15th and make sure ALL 25 spots are accounted for

PLEASE consider donating to help us support a very worthy cause! Every dollar makes a difference. We’ll be sharing updates as we work toward our goal!

And now to introduce Bak, a 24-year-old Gypsy Vanner who has lived a dozen lives. Originally imported from the UK in 2008, that was just the beginning of his journey. Over the years he found himself in multiple homes and he eventually ended up in the wrong hands, where he was severely neglected. He was in such horrible shape when he arrived at SSRR, they weren’t sure if he’d pull through.

Bak was there for almost two years. Not only did he require extensive rehab but he also has f***l water syndrome and he doesn’t sweat regularly (anhidrosis) which can be dangerous and hard to manage, especially in the FL heat. These things made it challenging to find the perfect home for him and he deserves nothing less!

During Preacher’s time at SSRR, he and Bak became quite fond of each other. Initially, only Preacher was coming to FCRR but after several conversations about Bak’s needs (and their bromance) we made the decision to keep them together. We know how special this boy is to many, many people and after two years. We can only imagine how hard it was to let him go and we’re honored to have him.

Despite everything he’s endured, Bak remains remarkably confident, trusting, and easygoing. He settled right in and hasn’t missed a beat. He’s also been a source of comfort for Preacher and I’m really glad they’re together. How lucky are we to love these boys through their golden years?!?

Formally introducing Preacher. Standing at 19.1 hands (6 feet 5 inches at the withers) he may look intimidating, but he’s far from it. He’s our 4th Belgian and true to the breed he’s calm, gentle, affectionate and eager to please. Preacher was an emergency surrender to Stricker Sunshine Rescue Ranch and he came to them in rough shape. Most notably, he was underweight and had a massive summer sore on his sheath that had to be surgically removed. He certainly ended up in the right hands with SSRR. His transformation was amazing and after a few months in their care, he hardly looked like the same horse.

Preacher has a history of heat sensitivity and has had some off and on respiratory issues which we’re monitoring closely. Unsurprisingly, he isn’t quite sure about lifting his feet so that’ll require ongoing work. We’re grateful to have a very skilled and patient farrier!

This big boy has been through a lot the last few months and at 20 years old, there’s no telling what his life was like prior. Right now, our priority is making sure he knows he’s safe. Understandably, he was a bit guarded at first but he’s already opened up so much. Each day we’re seeing more and more of his goofy personality. He’s truly a sweet, gentle soul and we’re so glad his next chapter is here with us.

Yesterday we welcomed two very special boys to the FCRR sanctuary. They came to us from another wonderful rescue where a lot of time, love and effort went into their rehab and care. These boys have been through a lot (individual intros coming soon) and we’re so grateful we get to give them the soft landing they deserve.
