🔍 Take a close look: Small but Mite-y 🔍

Highlighted in purple is a skin mite called demodex (DEE-mo-dex) seen under a microscope 🔬. These little 8-legged critters can be found in low numbers in healthy skin. However, some patients with weak immune systems can get an overgrowth that leads to mange, a type of really bad skin disease - think puppies, thyroid issues, etc. These mites are not contagious!

The patient this sample was taken from has been undergoing treatment for 6 weeks and is responding great. While there are still a lot of mites seen in this photo, they are all dead thanks to appropriate flea/tick treatmemt that also targets these mites. Just another way preventatives benefit our patients!

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink... Not true for our team! 💧💧
In this hot weather, horses can easily get a bit dehydrated and start to colic (have belly pain).
One treatment our vets perform on these emergency calls is to deliver fluids from a tube that goes through the nose and into the stomach. You can see the tube passing under the skin and through the esophagus in the video. Visualizing this is one way to make sure the tube isn't in the wind pipe - a crucial step before pumping in fluids.

In this heat watch for signs of colic like rolling, pawing, biting at their sides, or overall discomfort. Have fresh, clean water available at all times - this goes for all outdoor animals! 🐎🐐🐄
