ing. The close proximity of the space we share in city dwelling makes a reactive or aggressive dog stand out. It can also turn dangerous in some cases, injuring other dogs, cats or human adults or children. It is irresponsible for dog owners to allow this behavior to continue. At NexGen K9 we use a combination of techniques or "methods" We constantly update our skills by attending seminars and clinics. 🎓🐾 Look who graduated… INDY! 🐾🎓

When Indy first started training, this little Mini Aussie was extremely reactive and very insecure around children, strangers, and visitors in the home. Every day, the environment felt overwhelming, and she spent so much time focused on the “what ifs” around her.

Fast forward to today… 💙

Through engagement work, confidence-building, public outings, and learning to focus on her humans rather than the outside chaos, Indy has made HUGE progress. We focused on creating joy in the environment instead of fear — teaching her that she doesn’t have to worry about every sound, person, or movement around her.

Now Indy knows:
✨ Check in with Mom
✨ Stay engaged
✨ Have fun

This girl has worked so hard, and her humans showed up for her every single step of the way. Watching insecure dogs learn confidence and trust is one of the best parts of this job. So proud of you, Indy! 👏🐶

Training isn’t just about teaching the dog — it’s about teaching the human, too. 🐾

One of the best parts of working with Jennifer and Dexter has been watching Jennifer really pick up and apply the tools we worked on together. Consistency, timing, structure, and follow-through make all the difference.

Dogs thrive when their owners understand how to communicate clearly and lead confidently. Dexter’s progress didn’t happen by accident — it happened because Jennifer put in the work at home and stayed committed to the process.

A well-trained dog starts with an educated owner. 👏

🚨 The #3 Mistake Dog Owners Make When Training Their Dogs 🚨

Thinking your dog will “just get used to it.”

Doorbells. Dogs barking. People walking by. Guests coming over. Delivery trucks.

Many owners hope their dog will eventually stop reacting on their own — but without proper guidance, repetition often makes the behavior stronger, not weaker.

Every time your dog explodes at the doorbell or loses focus around another dog, they’re practicing that reaction. Dogs learn through repetition, and unwanted behaviors can quickly become habits.

The good news?
Reactivity can be improved with the right structure, leadership, and training plan. Teaching your dog how to stay calm and make better choices creates confidence for both you and your dog.

Don’t wait for the behavior to “grow out of it.” Train through it. 🐾

The #2 mistake puppy owners make?

Thinking “socialization” means letting their puppy meet every dog and person they see. 🐶

Proper socialization is NOT:
❌ Dog parks
❌ Random on-leash greetings
❌ Allowing every dog to invade your puppy’s space
❌ Uncontrolled play with unfamiliar dogs

That’s how puppies learn:
⚠️ Overexcitement
⚠️ Reactivity
⚠️ Poor impulse control
⚠️ Anxiety around other dogs

Proper socialization means teaching your puppy to stay neutral, calm, confident, and focused around the world — not dependent on interacting with everything in it.

Your puppy does NOT need to play with every dog to become socialized.

The goal is confidence and stability… not chaos.

🚨 Follow for Part 3 where we break down another major mistake dog owners make that creates long-term behavioral problems.

The #1 mistake new puppy owners make?

Treating their puppy like a baby instead of teaching them how to be a DOG. 🐾

Most bad behaviors don’t “just happen” — they’re accidentally created at home. Jumping, barking, pulling, separation anxiety, resource guarding… these habits are often reinforced without owners realizing it.

Puppies need:
✔️ Structure
✔️ Boundaries
✔️ Socialization
✔️ Clear communication
✔️ Accountability

A well-trained dog isn’t born — it’s developed through consistent guidance from day one.

🚨 Follow for Part 2 & 3 where we break down the next biggest mistakes puppy owners make — and how to avoid them before they become lifelong problems.

Training a dog as a couple? The biggest game-changer isn’t just what you teach your dog — it’s making sure both humans are communicating and handling things the same way. 🐾

When couples get on the same page with commands, boundaries, rewards, and expectations, dogs learn faster, feel more secure, and behavior improves dramatically. Consistency creates clarity — and clarity builds trust.

At NexGen K9, we love helping couples build a stronger relationship with their dog and with each other through clear, balanced training strategies that work in real life.

🚨 Frequently asked Question 🚨

“What do I do if an off-leash dog comes running and barking at me and my leashed dog?”

This situation can be stressful—but your reaction matters more than you think. Here’s how to handle it like a pro:

🐾 Stay calm & grounded
Dogs feed off your energy. Keep your movements slow and your voice steady.

🐾 Step in front of your dog
Place yourself between your dog and the approaching dog. This builds trust and adds a layer of protection.

🐾 Use a firm verbal cue
A confident “NO,” “GO HOME,” or “STOP” can sometimes interrupt the approaching dog’s behavior.

🐾 Avoid leash tension
Tightening the leash can increase your dog’s anxiety and reactivity. Keep it as loose as safely possible.

Training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about real-world confidence and safety for both you and your dog.

Meet Ares 🐺

Ares started his training journey with NexGenK9 at just 10 weeks old, and he’s already showing what it means to build a strong foundation early. As a male low-content wolf hybrid and sibling to Kaia, Ares brings both intelligence and drive to every session.

Right now, Ares is working on his foundational obedience—learning structure, engagement, and clear communication from the very beginning. Starting out on the right foot sets the tone for a confident, well-balanced companion down the line.

Tone matters more than most people realize.

Your dog isn’t just listening to words — they’re reading you. Your tone tells them whether to engage, ignore, get excited, or stay neutral.

If your voice is inconsistent, emotional, or unclear… your dog will be too.

Out here working dogs across Yolo, Solano, and the Greater Bay Area, I keep it simple:
- Calm, neutral tone for guidance
- Firm, steady tone for commands
- Genuine, upbeat tone for reward

No yelling. No chaos. No empty repetition.

Dogs thrive on clarity. The right tone builds understanding — and understanding builds reliability.

If your dog “isn’t listening,” take a step back and ask yourself… what are you really communicating?
