"Halito, my name is Murphy Peterson! I am honored to share that Career Development has played an enormous role in my academic and professional journey. With the support of the Choctaw Nation and my career counselor, Marianne Akins, I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree at East Central University in May. There were several personal obstacles I had to overcome during my undergraduate studies, yet I persevered with the support of my amazing family. Without the Choctaw Nation, I would not have been able to pursue my lifelong dream of obtaining higher education. I am so glad to share that, because of this program, I have been given the opportunity to teach 7th-Grade Reading & Writing at Hartshorne Middle School — my alma mater. I am so grateful to step into this new role and share my passion with my students. Yakoke to the Choctaw Nation, Career Development, and Marianne!"

An inspiring story to share about LaRanda Porter!
"As a single mom, making ends meet was not always the easiest. When I found out I was going to have my second baby at 39 and was told to take care of things or I would be a single mom of two, well I became a single mom of two. With a crazy life with my now two boys, one 95%of the time and one all the time, working full time and a part-time job in the evening. The ends not only didn’t meet any more, they couldn’t even see each other anymore. I knew I had to do something, so I could provide for my kids. I worked two sometimes three jobs for the next year, saved every penny I could, cashed in my retirement and went to Nursing school. I had no idea what was ahead of me for the next year. It was one of the hardest years of my life. There was very little sleep had and many tears shed. I spent more time reading about medical terms and learning how the body worked than I did seeing my kids over that year. Countless test, hours and hours of Clinicals but In the end it all worked out. I passed my NCLEX, and I am now an LPN. I am able to provide for my kids and give them the life they deserve.
I am so thankful for Choctaw Nation, Jennifer Watkins was amazing to work with, If she didn’t know the answer to my questions, she was going to find out for me. She got the HEROS Grants lined up, any time there were scholarships she was letting us know. The Choctaws took care of us student while In the program. And I am forever grateful and thankful for everything they did for me and my little family. I can now provide for my kids with less stress and for my oldest to see me struggle but see me succeed, I hope he takes that to heart.

Chloe has completed her Bachelor of Science degree of Dental Hygiene and is employed in her field!
Chloe has this to share with those considering the dental hygiene program, "It took two years of pre-requisites, a long application process, an interview, and maintaining a 4.0 to be selected. Once in the program, it was two years of countless hours studying for over 100 exams, 100's of quizzes, and who knows how many competencies. To become officially certified, you have four boards to pass the spring semester of your senior year to become registered in the state of Oklahoma."

Chloe suggests to others to learn how to study properly and efficiently early in your educational journey, which paid off for her as she passed her four licensing exams on her first try. She highly recommends working with the Career Development Program to meet your educational and career goals.

She is an absolute pro at managing our social media outlets and never misses an opportunity to educate tribal members about what Career Development has to offer. Every office needs a “Jana” and we would be lost without her!

Jana is Career Development’s Jack of all Trades! She is always willing to help out in any way she can and is able to reel us all in (and that is a lot considering staff is going all different directions all the time!). She is the first person a client speaks to and is the encouraging voice they need to take that next step. Jana is very thoughtful and puts together lunches for staff as well as kindness acts. Dorothea “Shauna” Humphreys has built her career on a strong commitment to serving Choctaw communities through leadership and advocacy in behavioral health care. Since beginning her career with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma in 2008, she has advanced through a variety of roles supporting patient services, grant-funded programs, and behavioral health initiatives.
In her current role as Director of Behavioral Health, Shauna oversees a comprehensive system of care serving thousands of patients annually across multiple sites. Her leadership focuses on expanding access, strengthening services, and supporting a dedicated workforce committed to the well-being of tribal members.
Shauna has been honored with several awards and continues to contribute her expertise through national and state advisory roles. She attended the commencement ceremony for her Doctorate in Healthcare Administration in May of 2026 with full completion by July 2026 at Oklahoma State University, reflecting her dedication to lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
Shauna is deeply grateful to Choctaw Nation Career Development for their unwavering support throughout her academic journey. Their investment has played a meaningful role in helping her achieve her educational goals and continue serving the Choctaw Nation with excellence.

Throughout her journey, Karis demonstrated determination, a strong work ethic, and a passion for learning. With the support of the Choctaw Nation Career Development Program, she earned both her associate's and bachelor's degrees and successfully launched her career in information technology. We are proud to celebrate her accomplishments and are excited to share her story in her own words.
"Hello, I am Karis Bohanan, an IT support specialist at Bachoco USA. I have an Associate’s degree in Computer Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from Northeastern State University. I am passionate about technology, problem solving, and continuous learning, with experience supporting enterprise systems, hardware, software, and networking. As a proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, I am grateful for the opportunities and support the tribe has provided throughout my educational and professional journey.
