How long do axolotls live? Axolotls can live about 15 years, but there is a catch. You have to be committed to maintaining their water quality. Nitrates naturally accumulate and water changes must be performed to keep them at healthy levels. If you are faithfully committed to this habit, chances are likely you will have many years to enjoy your precious aquatic pet. Healthy water levels:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5-20ppm

Hey everyone, I want to reach out and talk about fungus. We are seeing a lot of it this year. I suspect all the flooding this summer has introduced something into our water system that our axolotls are sensitive to. Our axolotls as well as customers axolotls are experiencing more frequent episodes of fungus and constipation. I will address our recommendation for each of these conditions.

Fungus: looks like fluffy white cotton. It usually shows up on the gills. Some folks see it covering the entire body suddenly. It’s very serious and needs to be treated quickly. We recommend Fritz Maracyn Oxy. Added to the tank, it is quick, effective and gentle. It can be difficult to find in stores. Since we are seeing it so frequently this year I suggest purchasing a bottle to have on hand.

Constipation: while usually not a serious concern, this year it seems a little more intense. If your axolotl becomes lethargic and spits up worms, give it a few days of fasting. Watch for p**p before resuming regular feeding. Adult axolotls have a slower metabolism and can go a week or more without food under these circumstances. Severe constipation or impaction is sometimes helped with daily oral doses of thinned pureed pumpkin.
