With the new disney movie “Cruella” coming out (2021) this is a timely chance to remind people that while Dalmatians are amazing dogs, they are not for every one and that any dog should be for life.
Yes ~ Dalmatians are stunning. 😍
They are also very active ~ bred to run all day long.
They are social ~ they love attention, they want to be allowed in doors, they want homes that will include them in everything.
They shed ~ ALOT more than you'd believe.
The breed has an affinity for stones and high rates of congenital deafness.
They are trainable, but can be easily bored or sensitive to techniques used.
When 101 dalmatians came out years ago, there was a rise in the popularity of the breed.
They were Backyard bred and puppy farmed.
Placed with homes that had not been vetted, homes that were not prepared or educated on the breed and puppies ~ the training, the socializing, the exercise, the lifestyle.
This led to an increase of Dalmatians in shelters, but not the beautiful dalmatians we strive for.
Fearful, aggressive, neurotic dogs.
Crippled by the wrong start in life(indiscriminant breeders, using dogs that shouldn't have been bred, and not taking responsibility for the dogs they had brought into this world) and the wrong homes not equipped for this beautiful breed.
Dalmatians are amazing dogs
BUT only in the right environment!
If they are the right breed for you go to a reputable breeder, or shelter/rescue ONLY.
Don't browse Gumtree or petshops or go to backyard greeders.
Look to your kennel club or local breed club and check reputable sites like Dogz Online and Perfect Pets.
Ask questions and answer questions.
If you are considering breeding:
If you see dollar signs instead of living beings DO NOT BREED...
Leave breeding to responsible breeders who are educated in the breed and know what they are doing.
Leave breeding to dogs who are healthy, sound and undeniably brilliant examples of the breed.
Leave breeding to those who will vet and educate homes and who will provide life time support to their puppy families long after the movie hype has passed.
IF you are wanting to breed find a mentor and do it the right way for your dogs and the breeds benefit.
Please do not contribute towards shelter population by poor ownership, and poor breeding decisions.
