At AVDS, we believe knowledge is power—especially when it comes to anesthesia.

Our incredible vet tech team recently had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Lukasik, a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, expanding their expertise in advanced anesthetic techniques and anesthesia safety protocols.
Anesthetizing a pet can cause pet owners to fear getting their pets treated at all.

That's why our practice invests in specialized education✨ and hands-on learning that goes above and beyond. Our team is continuously improving to provide the safest, most advanced care possible for every pet that comes through our doors. 💙

When you trust us with your pet’s health, you deserve to feel confident in a team that’s always striving to learn and be better.

Molly is a newly-adopted one-year old pitbull with a history of a jaw fracture stemming from being hit by a car.

When Molly’s new family noticed that her breath could be fresher along with a missing tooth, they knew something wasn’t right. 🤔 So they brought her to us for a full exam. 🦷🦠
While under anesthesia, we found something concerning—two retained tooth roots still embedded in Molly's gumline. Left untreated, these could lead to pain, infection, and long-term dental problems.

AVDS's Dr. Balke carefully extracted the fragments, and Molly is now happy, healthy, and healing at home! 🩵

Dental issues aren’t always obvious, but they can have a major impact on a pet’s quality of life and wellbeing.
If something seems off with your pet’s teeth, don’t wait—we’re here to help.

💬 “The only place I trust…” That’s what Rhonda S. said after bringing her Miniature Schnauzer, Gracie, in to us for dental care.

When you bring your pet to the vet, it means everything to know they are in gentle, compassionate hands with a team that truly cares.

We’re grateful to be a part of Gracie’s story and honored to be the trusted choice for so many pet parents in Arizona.

Surprising fact! 🦷
Small dog breeds like and are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease, weakening their already-delicate bones, leading to jaw fractures. ⚡️

But with regular care, our team can help keep their smiles healthy—now and for years to come! 🐶✨

Have you ever tried brushing your dog’s teeth? It’s easier than you think! 🐶✨

Most dogs (especially small breeds) show signs of dental disease by age three, but regular brushing and dental cleanings starting at one year of age can make a huge difference in keeping their teeth and gums healthy.

In this video, Dr. Adrian walks you through a simple, stress-free way to brush your dog’s teeth.

💡 A few quick tips:
✔️ Use pet-safe toothpaste—never human toothpaste! 🐓
✔️ Start slow and make it a positive experience.👍
✔️ Focus on the outer surfaces where plaque builds up.🦠
✔️ Keep it short, sweet, and full of treats! 🍗
It's great to make brushing your dog's teeth a daily habit, but professional cleanings are just as important. Have your pet's teeth checked yearly.

We know what you’re thinking—brushing a cat’s teeth sounds impossible, right? 😹 But with patience, practice, and a gentle approach, it can become part of yours and your cat's daily routine.
Here, is doing an amazing job showing how to brush her cat’s teeth the right way—kind, gentle, loving and as stress-free as possible! 👏👏

Why is it so important?
😺 Most cats show signs of dental disease by age three.
😺 Brushing helps prevent painful infections, tooth loss, and serious health issues down the road.
😺 Starting young makes it a whole lot easier, but older cats can learn too!

How to make it a habit:
✔️ Use pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste!).
✔️ Take it slow—let them lick the toothpaste first before brushing.
✔️ Short & sweet sessions = less stress!
✔️ Try to brush daily—even a little is better than nothing.

Dental disease is no joke, and a little effort goes a long way! If you notice bad breath, red gums, or tartar buildup, it might be time for a professional dental checkup.

🎓 Training the Next Generation of Veterinary Dentists! 🚀
At Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists, we’re passionate about shaping the future of veterinary dentistry. Our team of board-certified specialists partners with universities to develop a comprehensive dental track, giving veterinary students essential knowledge and hands-on experience.

🦷 With over two weeks of hands-on wet labs, students get the opportunity to:
✔️ Learn to identify oral anatomy and master conducting oral exams
✔️ Interpret dental radiographs and understand the equipment and techniques involved in taking them
✔️ Perform extractions with confidence and practice nerve blocks under expert guidance

AVDS' Dr. Fink leads this educational initiative, collaborating with other AVDS specialists and technicians to mentor students and spark their passion for veterinary dentistry.
1️⃣ The first week focuses on building a solid foundation—oral exams, anatomy, and radiograph interpretation.
2️⃣ In the second week, we dive into advanced skills like extractions and anesthesia techniques for pain management.

Programs like this are a major step forward in veterinary education, ensuring that future veterinarians are prepared to offer exceptional dental care to their patients.

👩‍🏫 Guiding this next generation are Drs. Coffman, Malott, Ha, and Fink, along with CVT Carrie Winckler and other dedicated AVDS team members. Together, we’re raising the bar in veterinary dentistry!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month 🦷— and it's the perfect time to invest in your pet’s oral health.

While dental procedures for our pets can seem pricey, there are good reasons behind the cost:
1️⃣ Anesthesia
2️⃣ X-rays, and
3️⃣ Specialized expertise of a dedicated team are all part of ensuring your furry friend gets top-notch care.

💬 As AVDS' Dr. Curt Coffman says, “Preventive dental care is key.” Regular cleanings can help head off bigger (and more expensive) issues down the road, protecting your pet’s overall well-being.🧘‍♀️

Meet Rusty the Rescue!
Rusty came to us through Paws Without Borders, a local rescue, after suffering from an unknown head trauma. He had a shrunken eye, a painful draining lesion, and couldn’t fully open his mouth. But what stood out most about Rusty was his sweet, resilient demeanor despite everything he’d been through. 💓
Dr. Balke and our Gilbert team got to work, performing a right-sided coronoidectomy, zygomectomy, enucleation, and tissue repair to give Rusty the relief and care he deserves. Thanks to these highly specialized surgeries, Rusty is now pain-free, happy, and ready to take on the world! 🌎
Stories like Rusty’s are why we love what we do. We’re so grateful to the rescue team for trusting us to help Rusty heal and to give him a second chance at life.
Here’s to Rusty living his best life from here on out! 🐶✨

We're pleased to introduce you to this handsome patient, Jack!

This sweet Pitbull was super nervous about visiting the dentist, but with the gentle care of Dr. Fink, Mandy, and the rest of our team, both Jack and his mom, Janie, felt completely at ease. 💙

We made sure to keep Janie updated every step of the way, and Jack’s procedure went swimmingly well! When it was all said and done, Janie said it was “the best experience” and that next year’s cleaning will be stress-free for both of them.

Helping nervous pets like Jack (and their amazing humans) is one of things we love most about our job! Thank you, Janie, for trusting us with Jack's care!

👨‍🔧 When he’s not fixing pet smiles, you’ll find him flying ✈️, exploring the great outdoors🏕️, or hanging out with his significant other and five rescue dogs (you read that right, FIVE!) 🐶.
