Does your young horse have bumps on its nose? Don’t panic! It’s likely a case of juvenile warts, or Equine Papilloma Virus (EPV). This extremely common skin condition primarily targets foals, yearlings, and horses under 3 years old because their immune systems are still developing. While they can look a bit alarming, they are generally harmless, temporary, and strictly cosmetic.

A quick "factory restart" to get this foal back on track!

This little one is experiencing Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome (often called "dummy foal syndrome"). It causes newborns to appear disoriented, detached, and unable to nurse.

Why does it happen? It often occurs after a rapid birth. The foal misses out on the prolonged pressure of the birth canal, which signals the brain to transition from a sleep-like state to the outside world.

The Fix: The Madigan Squeeze. By wrapping and tightening ropes around the chest, handlers simulate the pressure of the birth canal. This 20-minute squeeze safely triggers a hormonal switch, effectively "rebooting" the foal's brain and central nervous system.

This sweet doe was examined postpartum and needed an ultrasound to look at her uterus. Motherhood is a wild ride 🤪

Time to rise and shine ✨

While we try to keep our patients standing for most procedures, sometimes we prefer to lie them down under general anesthesia for both the safety of the patient, safety of the doctor, and to ensure a better outcome from the procedure.

This patient is recovering from anesthesia… but don’t worry… we’re there to help him get back on his feet!

Do you know the 1-2-3 rule of foaling? The milestones we look for are…

The foal should STAND within 1 hour
The foal should NURSE within 2 hours
The mare should pass her PLACENTA within 3 hours

If these milestones are not met… the vet should be called immediately! If they are met, we recommend a new foal exam at around 12hrs to assess if the foal is on the right track. EARLY intervention when milestones are not hit is essential!

To help protect your horse’s long-term respiratory health, we’ve put together a practical care guide for these conditions.

Please share this if you or someone you know may need it right now.
