Reposting this link from summer! We are in a major parvo outbreak right now! Please share! Parvo vaccines are at a reduced price through January! Help us fight this deadly disease!
Alert!!! We are seeing an unprecedented amount of Parvovirus in our area for the “winter outbreak”. Most people think parvovirus outbreaks only take place in late spring and summer but here in North Central Florida we always get an outbreak in December and January as well. This year has been the worse in many years and the strains of the virus are highly virulent ( cause deadly illness). We have had over 20 cases over the past few weeks. Here is what you should know to keep your pet safe.
Vaccination against Canine Parvo Virus is highly effective and is considered a core vaccine for all dogs. Dogs are typically administered a combination vaccine (DAPP) that includes canine distemper, adenovirus, canine parvovirus, and parainfluenza. The first vaccine is given to puppies when they are 6 to 8 weeks of age, then every 2 to 4 weeks until they are at least 16 to 20 weeks of age. Puppies remain susceptible to disease until 2 weeks after the final vaccination in that series is administered, meaning precautions should be taken to avoid high-risk areas (eg, public places, dog parks, other puppies, unvaccinated dogs) from birth until 2 weeks after they receive the final vaccination in the puppy series.
Misconception: “if mom is vaccinated then the puppies should be fine”. Wrong! Puppies will have immunity only while nursing but the maternal antibodies were off within 2 weeks after the puppies stop nursing!
After the puppy series, The vaccine is then administered 1 year after the completion of their puppy series, then every 1 to 3 years thereafter.
Please know that parvo virus can live in the soil for over 6 years so your dog does not have to have contact with a sick dog..keep your pet up to date on vaccination!
In the event your pet is infected, we do carry the monoclonal antibody at our clinic and are fully prepared to treat your pet. The monoclonal antibody is a new and amazing treatment to fight parvo but must be given in the early stages of the disease and is expensive so vaccination is key!!
Due to this recent outbreak we are offering discounted 1 year and 3 year Dhapp vaccines the month of January at but the Trenton Animal Hospital location and Tricounty Veterinary ER!
1 year vaccine $25 (typically 35)
3 year vaccine $40 (typically 58)
Please share so we can help fight this deadly virus!!
