Every year on August 26, National Dog Day celebrates the bond between humans and dogs while spotlighting the many dogs still in need of a loving home. It’s a day for dog lovers to honor their furry companions, advocate for better treatment of animals, and support rescue and adoption efforts. Whether your best friend has been with you for years or you’re just beginning your journey together, National Dog Day is about recognizing the role dogs play in our lives – and how we can give back.
National Dog Day is a celebration of all dogs – mixed breed and pure. The day was created not only to honor dogs for their companionship, loyalty, and bravery, but also to raise awareness about the large number of dogs that need to be rescued every year. The day calls attention to dogs in shelters, the importance of adoption, and issues like puppy mills, breed-specific legislation, and animal cruelty. From service dogs and working dogs to family pets and strays, National Dog Day embraces them all.
