A Duo Mobility Assistance Dog is more than a well-behaved dog. The best Mobility Assistance Dogs combine a calm temperament and a strong work ethic. They remain focused in busy public settings, confidently navigate new environments, and are always ready to help when needed.

These remarkable dogs are trained to perform tasks such as retrieving dropped items, opening doors, turning lights on and off, carrying objects, and assisting with daily routines. Just as important, they build strong bonds with their handlers, creating partnerships rooted in trust and teamwork that help increase independence and confidence every day.

Working in the courtroom on this wonderful Wednesday. The most important question today was from a judge who asked my hooman if I also stand when the judges come out of chambers. The answer is, “yes I do because that’s what my hooman and friends do and I wouldn’t think to let them do anything on their own.” 🐕‍🦺🐾💙

For the past 2½ years, Lexi S. has been making a difference through her dedication to Duo Dogs and the people we serve.

Her journey began in college, where therapy dogs visiting the library during finals week helped reduce her stress and anxiety. Inspired by that experience, she started looking for somewhere to train with her dog, Yadi, with hopes of providing that same comfort to others. She discovered Duo on Instagram and knew she had found the right place to volunteer.

Today, Lexi wears many hats at Duo. She and Yadi were certified as a Duo Touch Therapy Team in 2023. She served as a Volunteer Puppy Raiser for Duo Dog Pete from the Big 10 litter. Lexi is also involved with our Young Friends of Duo group and has introduced countless new people to our mission by organizing corporate volunteer opportunities and visits.

One of Lexi’s favorite parts of volunteering is witnessing the joy a dog brings wherever they go. Whether it's a patient facing a difficult day, an employee needing a moment of relief, or someone simply running errands, she loves seeing smiles appear as the dog walks by.

"Volunteering with Duo Dogs has shown me how powerful the little things can be. Whether I'm helping train a future service dog or out on a therapy visit, it's amazing how much of a difference a few minutes and a happy dog can make. Touch Therapy dogs create a safe, welcoming space that encourages people to open up and engage more easily, including myself."

While receiving care at St. Louis Children's Hospital, Jake Tallon formed a special bond with Duo Facility Dog Casey. The comfort, companionship, and support Casey provided left a lasting impact on Jake and his family.

Following Jake's passing last year, his family chose to honor his memory by helping ensure other children and families experience the same comfort and connection that meant so much to them. Their generous gift will underwrite the training and placement of Casey's successor after he retires.

This remarkable act of generosity creates a living legacy of compassion, hope, and healing. We are deeply grateful to the Tallon family and the The Jake Tallon 47 Strong Foundation for turning their love for Jake into an opportunity to support countless others.

Thank you for helping us continue to build extraordinary bonds between people and dogs that change lives every day, and for allowing us to help carry on Jake's legacy.

Relaxation group is designed to support the full picture of recovery. During this session, patients practiced breathing and focus techniques that can help lower stress, reduce muscle tension and improve overall well‑being. Seated together in a structured setting, patients worked on slowing their breathing and building awareness of how to manage stress responses. Duo Dog Kia remained close throughout the session, adding a calming and reassuring presence. His quiet companionship helped create an environment where patients could feel supported as they practiced skills that help the whole person, body and mind alike.

Meet the Team Monday: Kathy Fournier, Volunteer Coordinator

Kathy joined Duo Dogs as our Volunteer Coordinator in October 2025, but her Duo journey began even earlier when she started working toward becoming a certified Duo Touch Therapy Team in the fall of 2024 with her golden retriever, Archie. While she has only been with Duo for a short time, she has already been inspired by the countless stories she hears from community members about the comfort, connection, and support a Duo Dog provided during a difficult moment in their lives.

If Kathy could switch roles for a day, she would choose to be one of our Obedience or Touch Therapy trainers. She admires their ability to build understanding and trust between dogs and their handlers while strengthening those special bonds. If she could instantly master any skill, it would be dog training and behavior, allowing her to better understand how dogs communicate and learn.

Outside of work, Kathy enjoys reading, spending time with friends, exploring Missouri's beautiful parks, and listening to live music. As a Missouri Master Naturalist, she is also passionate about helping others connect with the natural world around them.
