Sangamon County Animal Control took in many of the displaced shelter animals from the APL. Their facility has already been pretty maxed out. If you are thinking about adopting a pet, please go to the SCAC adoption center to find your new best friend today! Cats are especially in need. If you can’t adopt, they are also in need of supplies❤️🐾

The APL took a major hit last night from a suspected tornado. Word from them this morning is that all animals have been safely evacuated but their building looks like a total loss. Our hearts are with the APL this morning and we are grateful that no animals or staff members were lost.
The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport also suffered major damage, as well as many homes and buildings in the path of the storm.
We hope everyone out there is safe today. Check fences and gates before letting your dogs out, as the storm may have caused damage allowing your pet passage out of the yard.
The APL, Sangamon County Animal Control, and all of the other organizations and people that are aiding could use help with prayers and donations at this time. If you are willing to foster or adopt, please see information on the APL’s website or go directly to the SCAC adoption center.

Please help! An APL foster dog has gone missing. Addie is a tan and white female pit bull that weighs about 55 lbs. She was last seen around the intersection of North 8th St and Ridgely Ave in Springfield, IL heading west. Addie has a distinctive paw injury that was being managed by APL’s medical team, so her gait is slower and different than that of a normal dog.

She is not fond of other animals but loves people and has been very friendly with them. If you see her, please approach slowly and try calling her to you to not spook her. Do not chase her.

Summer is just warming up ☀️🏖️

If you are traveling with your pet, whether it’s a quick trip to the grocery store or a cross country road-trip, make sure they have a cool, temperate environment in your vehicle.

For pets spending excess time outdoors, keep plenty of fresh water and create shaded areas for resting.

Limit outdoor exercise to early mornings or evenings when the sun is lower on the horizon.

Heat stroke can happen quickly. If you suspect your pet is experiencing symptoms of heat stroke contact your veterinarian or local animal emergency clinic immediately.
