Animal Help Now

With Easter almost here, we join animal advocates nationwide in encouraging people to choose gifts other than live animals for children this Easter. Rabbits, ducks and chicks are poor choices as gifts because they require specialized care that many families are unprepared or unable to give. Like shelter workers, who report an uptick in surrenders of these animals after Easter when the novelty wears off, wildlife rehabilitators frequently report having to field calls about animals like these who are left to fend for themselves in the wild. Choose plush toys or candy animals as gifts, and consider a holiday outing to a farmed animal or wildlife sanctuary for children who are interested in spending time with live animals.

DID YOU KNOW that gerbils LOVE hay? As omnivores it is not essential to their diet, but it sure is appreciated and is great for enrichment. It is sometimes referred to as “gerbil catnip!” (Gerbilnip?) They chew it up and add it to their nests. The roughage seems to help with digestive issues in certain cases. Timothy, oat, meadow, and botanical hay varieties are all great choices. Alfalfa hay is too high in protein and calcium to give regularly to anyone except pups and pregnant/nursing moms. Buy hay that is sold specifically for small animals (such as from a pet store) instead of for farm animals or put it in the freezer overnight to kill off outside parasites. Stuff hay in cardboard tubes or boxes to serve, or just throw it right in the tank, and let the party begin! Do you give your gerbils hay? What type(s) do you give, and do you have any fun ideas for giving it?

I am home and safe after an absolutely amazing week of ministering to many beautiful children (and some adults) in Honduras with a great team from my church. It was such a privilege and blessing. Central America holds a special place in my heart (I’ve enjoyed missions in Guatemala & Nicaragua too). I never expected or wanted to be single again, but I am trying my best to trust in the Lord and make the most of every opportunity He brings my way in this new phase in life, as I stand for my marriage. I even went zip lining over a gorgeous waterfall! As much as I loved that experience, the best part of my trip was the smiles and hugs from the kids!!! Special thanks to Gigi Carr, Rachel Carr Quill, James Quill, and Donna Saisi Anastasi for their support and pet sitting. I couldn’t do it without you! 💕
