Public Safety Notice – Venmo Donation Scam

The Smyrna Police Department has received multiple reports involving individuals approaching shoppers in parking lots around the Sam Ridley area, including Target, Kohl’s, Home Depot, and other nearby businesses. These individuals claim to be collecting donations for a basketball team and, in some cases, selling candy.

In these incidents, victims who agreed to donate were asked to scan a Venmo QR code. After the scan, the donation amount was altered to exceed $1,000 without the victim’s authorization.

The most recent incident occurred at Home Depot. The Smyrna Police Department is actively monitoring shopping areas and will pursue these crimes.

Please be advised:

-Do not scan Venmo (or other payment app) QR codes presented by unknown individuals.

-Scanning a code can allow access to your payment accounts and result in unauthorized transactions.

-Remain vigilant when approached for donations in parking lots or other public areas.

If you are approached by individuals soliciting donations in this manner, please contact the Smyrna Police Department at 615-459-6644 immediately to report the incident.
