🎃 Happy Dogtober from Behavior United!

This month, we're celebrating our amazing dog clients and all the skills they've been building — with their people right beside them, cheering them on. 🧡

🚪 Accepting strangers into their home — guests at the door, no longer a big scary event
💪 Building confidence — braver dogs, one small win at a time
🐾 Co-existing with other dogs in the home — sharing space (and sometimes the couch) peacefully
✨ Basic manners — the everyday stuff that makes life together easier
🦮 Loose leash walking — strolls that actually feel like strolls

Every one of these skills takes practice, patience, and a whole lot of treats. We're so proud of these dogs and their people for putting in the work — force-free, all the way. 🐾

🎃 Halloween Help for Dogs, Sorted.

If your dog loves children and dogs in costumes at your front door — congratulations, you have a unicorn. The rest of us need a plan. 👇

👻 Costumes: try before you buy. Put a tee shirt on your dog. Freeze = uncomfortable. Wiggly wag from the shoulders back = comfortable. If they freeze, skip the costume — snap a cute photo by the decorations instead. If they love it, keep it simple: nothing that blocks vision or movement.

🍬 Trick-or-treating: it depends on your dog. Frenetic movement, jump-scare decorations, shadowy costumed silhouettes — that's a lot. It takes an incredibly social dog to handle fright night nonplussed.

🚪 Who's at the door? Unless your dog has a bombproof sit/stay and is quiet with doorbells and knocking, skip the front-door duty. Bedroom or crate + a frozen stuffed food puzzle + some Through a Dog's Ear music to mask the sounds = a much happier dog.

🎉 Our favorite move: the porch party. Invite neighbors to sit in the driveway and hand out candy (no door knocks, no doorbells), snacks on the table, and the dog inside working on her puzzle, blissfully unaware of the creature features outside.

Halloween is strange for dogs. Don't be afraid to let yours sit this one out. 🧡

🍁 Fall is for the dogs — cool air, crunchy leaves, and adventures that don't melt anybody. Some favorites:

🥾 Sniffari hikes — skip the agenda, follow the nose
🎃 Dog-friendly pumpkin patches & orchards (call first!)
🌽 Leaf-pile play — nature's best enrichment toy
☕ Patio hangs at dog-friendly cafés while the weather's still kind

But here's the part that makes or breaks the outing: reading your dog while you're out there.

Having fun looks like:
✨ Loose, wiggly body and a soft, open-mouth "smile"
✨ Play bows, bouncy movement, choosing to dive back in
✨ Exploring, sniffing, and checking in with you on their own

Needs a break looks like:
🛑 Lip licking, yawning, or a big shake-off
🛑 Panting hard when it's not hot, tail tucked, ears pinned
🛑 Pulling toward the car, avoiding the fun, or suddenly "not listening"

When you see the second list, don't push through — pause. Water, shade, distance, a few quiet minutes. Sometimes the break is the reset they need; sometimes the kindest call is heading home early and ending on a good note.

The best fall outing isn't the longest one. It's the one your dog would choose again. 🧡

🐢 Your dog gets to set the pace.

On walks. In training. In new places. In life.

We tend to measure progress in how much our dogs can handle — longer walks, busier parks, harder challenges. But more isn't always better. Pushing a dog past what they're ready for isn't building confidence. It's flooding them.

Your dog is always telling you how it's going:

🐾 Pulling toward home, freezing, or suddenly sniffing the ground like it's fascinating? That's not stubborn. That's "I'm struggling."
🐾 Soft body, loose leash, checking in with you? That's "I've got this — let's keep going."

Listening doesn't slow training down. It's what makes training work. When we back off before a dog is overwhelmed, they learn the world is safe — and that we’re safe to trust.

And here's the other half: lean into what they love. The sniffer gets the long, meandering sniffari. The shredder gets boxes to destroy. The chaser gets the flirt pole. Joy isn't a reward you tack on at the end — it's the curriculum.

Slow down. Watch. Listen. Let them lead sometimes. You'll be amazed what they tell you. 💛

📚 Pop quiz: your dog loses it every time someone knocks. Show your work.

🍂 Fall hiking season is HERE — and it's the best time of year to hit the trail with your dog.

Cooler temps, fall colors, fewer bugs, emptier trails. Plus — some of the best adventures are a short drive away.

A few trail-smart reminders before you go:

🥾 Match the hike to YOUR dog. A 10-mile mountain trek is amazing for a fit young athlete — and miserable for a senior, a puppy, or a couch-potato companion. Start shorter than you think and build up. A tired dog isn't a "good tired" if they're sore for three days.

💧 Pack water and a bowl for both of you. Cool air doesn't mean no dehydration.

🐕 Keep them close. Wildlife is stocking up for winter and extra active right now — a long line gives freedom without the risk.

🎒 Bring the essentials: p**p bags, treats for recall practice, and first-aid basics.

The trail will still be there next weekend. Go at your dog's pace and you'll both actually enjoy it.

🎃 Halloween is two and a half weeks away — the perfect time to prep your pup!

🔔 Doorbell dread: If your dog loses it at the doorbell, start now. Pair the sound with treats — play a doorbell tone on your phone at low volume, then treat. Short sessions, big payoff by the 31st.

👻 Costume test drive: Don't wait until Halloween night to discover the costume is a no. Let your dog sniff it, drape it loosely, treat generously. If they're not happy, skip it — a festive bandana totally counts!

🍬 Candy lockdown: Chocolate and xylitol (in sugar-free candy) are toxic to dogs. Keep the bowl up high and make a candy-trade plan with the kids.

A little prep now = a calmer Halloween for everyone. 🧡

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and we want to honor a 10,000-year partnership: Indigenous peoples and their dogs.

Dogs arrived in the Americas alongside the first peoples, over 10,000 years ago. They hunted, hauled, stood watch, and were family. The Xoloitzcuintli was sacred to the Mexica, believed to guide souls through the underworld. And for thousands of years, the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest carefully bred the woolly dog — a small, fluffy dog whose soft undercoat was sheared and woven into ceremonial blankets. These dogs were cherished: fed salmon, combed regularly, and kept on islands apart from other dogs.

Colonization nearly erased these ancient lineages. Genetic research shows the pre-contact dogs of the Americas rapidly disappeared after Europeans arrived — through disease, persecution, and displacement. The Salish woolly dog is extinct; only a single pelt survives, a dog named Mutton who died in 1859, now held at the Smithsonian.

The bond between people and dogs on this continent is ancient, deep, and Indigenous. Every time we train with patience, kindness, and respect, we honor a partnership that began thousands of years before us.

We remember them today. 🧡
