Leptospirosis, a preventable risk. . .
Lepto is transmitted through contact with infected animal urine, usually found in soil or water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease and many mammals are susceptible, including dogs, people, livestock, and even certain wildlife. Although rare, cats also may become ill.
Lepto is a risk for all dogs, not just rural or high-exposure pets. Urban dogs at dog parks, boarding facilities, or even those just drinking from a sidewalk puddle are not exempt.
Treatment includes antibiotics and supportive care. Depending on how sick an affected dog is, they may require fluid therapy, certain medications, and nutritional support. Dogs with severe disease may need intensive care measures, such as oxygen therapy or dialysis.
