Just in time for National Dog Day, the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games is unleashing its newest team member, Champ, a golden retriever therapy dog who will serve as the official mascot and four-legged ambassador for the USA Games, scheduled to take place from June 20-26, 2026 in Minnesota.

Champ isn't just here for belly rubs and photo ops – though she welcomes both! She joins the team with an important mission to champion inclusion, uplift communities and bring comfort to athletes and fans alike. From the field to the finish line, Champ will serve as the ulti-mutt multi-sport ambassador, embodying values like sportsmanship, inclusivity and spirit wherever she goes.

"We're incredibly proud to introduce Champ as the first live mascot in the history of the Special Olympics USAGames," said Christy Sovereign, CEO of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. I copied this from my Golden Retriever discussion group. It was written by Robin Baker ( Aubridge Goldens) Robin co-owned Elmer who was the sire of the “Hero” litter.
Josh Stern who is running this laboratory is a very kind and amazing researcher. He also, has done a lot of the cardiac clinics for heart clearances. Just two lovely people.
This Stern laboratory is going to really advance the health of Golden Retrievers.

The Stern Lab Golden Retriever Genetic Health Research Fund

‘Investing in discovering, preventing and treating inherited diseases of golden retrievers!’

A new non-profit fund has been established in support of Golden Retriever Health and Genetics! This fund supports the Stern Laboratory’s research benefitting golden retriever health and longevity. It provides critical support for genetic discovery, preclinical and clinical research efforts aiming to improve the health and genetics of golden retrievers.

Dr. Joshua Stern and his dedicated laboratory team have a proven track record in golden retriever research. From genetic diversity, improving our understanding of the heritability of subaortic stenosis, tackling nutritionally mediated DCM in the breed, and most recently discovering the cause of HCM in golden retrievers. The Stern Lab is actively investigating the genetics of MMM, subaortic stenosis, and inherited arrhythmias in the breed. This fund supports impactful research focused on GOLDENS and delivering beneficial results! The Stern Laboratory has used past donor support to accomplish a great deal of this research to date. Ok, deep breath. A video came up on my feed from The Asher House.
In it a woman was relinquishing her Golden girl because of anxiety, resource guarding and because she kept picking up everything.
Please people be aware. Golden Retrievers are primary hunting retrievers. It is in their DNA.
If you cannot commit or do not like the following DO NOT GET A GOLDEN!
They need daily exercise. They need mental stimulation. They were bred to pick things up and carry them. If you do not want your shoes, glasses, papers, phones picked up provide them with a toy box and teach them what is theirs.
Most of all they need training. Lots of it. They need to know boundaries.
After all of this they need the love and attention and to be an inside dog even with the mud, dirt and debris they bring in.
The owner in the video muzzled her dog in the evening to keep it from picking things up.
My head spun around when I read that. Thank goodness this dog was relinquished.
A Golden is not for everyone. Please do your homework first.

A very tired “Pip” is excited to announce that she has more letters to put behind her name.
Pip earned her CCA ( certificate of conformation assessment) yesterday with the NorCal Golden Retriever Club.
A wonderful event hosted by NorCal GRC that includes a thorough critique and assessment by three individual judges. A great way to learn your dogs strengths and weaknesses.
Pip is now Legend’s Timeless Classic At Morning Sky RN,TKN,CCA
