City Farm SLO provides small farmers with affordable land and services to enable sustainable crop production, educates SLO County youth with farm-based programming, models innovative agricultural practices, and fosters an engaged community of people who have an appreciation for the agricultural heritage of our region and an affinity for agricultural recreation.

Junior Farmers Summer Camp was tons of fun! 🌞

Our students transplanted beets, lettuce, snow peas, and flowers into our Garden for All, learned about monarch butterfly metamorphosis and the importance of milkweed as habitat, and got to harvest zucchinis, grapes, and tomatoes to enjoy! 🧑‍🌾 👩‍🌾

They spent more time caring for our chickens and sheep, learned about the San Luis Obispo watershed, and cooled off from the summer sun in both the hose and the creek!💧 We also loved playing so many camp games. Having junior farmers on the farm was such a treat! 🌱

We’re looking forward to our upcoming After School Programs on Tuesdays & Thursdays— keep an eye out for more information!

These Junior Farmers are having a blast at Farm Camp! 🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾

In the first two days of camp, we learned about and explored soil types, started seeds, learned to feed and care for our sheep and chickens, adventured in Prefumo Creek, prepared farm snacks and lunches from our harvests, and played LOTS of farm games!

We love the energy and curiosity that each of our Junior Farmers are bringing!

Cohort 15 is well underway! 🌞

Week 1 was full of zucchini and tomato harvests, livestock feeding and care, and refreshing our new farm stand sign, with contributions from all three cohorts! 🍅

Throughout the week, students have learned about the missions of various nonprofits including SLO Food Bank, the Land Conservancy, City Farm SLO, and Community Alliance for Family Farmers. They have also gotten to set program specific goals, distinguish between pests and beneficial insects, understand different farming methods, build resumes, practice interviewing, and spend time practicing intentional observation through nature journaling. 🌱 This week will be our last week of the Youth Empowerment Program for the summer!

This interactive session will walk you through food safety plan development, offer practical FSMA compliance tips, and include a mock farm inspection led by CDFA inspector, Benjamin Taylor, to help you prepare your farm for food safety compliance . You'll also hear from UCANR advisor, Claire Tuohey-Mote, about current funding and grant opportunities to support your operation.

City Farm SLO is the first urban farm, spanning 19 acres in the heart of the City of San Luis Obispo on the Calle Joaquin Ag Reserve. City Farm SLO represents a unique collaboration among municipal government, a non-profit organization, business enterprises, educational institutions, and public and private funding agencies committed to the revival of community engagement in sustainable agriculture.
