Screwworms have been found in Texas. Keep an eye on your livestock and pets.

Signs of New World screwworm infestation include foul smell

New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, has been found again in Texas after previously being eradicated. Karl Harborth, a livestock specialist with the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, recommends checking animals every two to three days, treating wounds immediately, and being alert for signs of infestation, such as foul-smelling wounds, visible maggots or eggs, and unusual restlessness or lethargy. If screwworm is suspected, animal owners should contact the Texas Animal Health Commission and a veterinarian, and they should not transport the animal.
