I’m sure everyone in the area already knows but we had a case of New World Screw Worms close by and everyone has alot of questions.
It is a scary topic for our pets but there is no need to panic. The infection from a New World screwworm is not contagious like the common cold. Just because one pet has it does not necessarily mean another in the house might get it. They are a fly larvae. So fly control is where you can start.
The good news is that prevention is straightforward. Most monthly flea and tick preventatives already on the market are effective against screwworms as well. Those options include NexGard, Bravecto, Credelio, Simparica and Nexgard combo for cats. Just having a good flea and tick prevention on will be a big help. The active ingredient in these products Fluralaner which has been FDA approved for prevention and treatment of screwworms.
As of right now, there are no quarantines or movement restrictions on dogs/cats even if you live in the infested zone. TAHC just asks that everyone remains vigilant and monitors their pets closesly. If you are already giving an approved flea/tick medication the risk is very low. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call or text us.
We are all in this together and we will get through it again.

As temperatures rise, keeping pets properly hydrated becomes even more important. Dehydration can happen quickly, especially during warmer days or increased activity.

Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water and watch for signs like excessive panting or lethargy. Staying hydrated is a simple but essential part of keeping pets healthy and comfortable.
