Let’s give Sugar the spotlight for a minute!

Sugar is the sweetest little girl! Standing at just 30 inches tall, she’s our tiny powerhouse. Only our littlest and calmest riders get the privilege of climbing aboard this special girl.

Sugar came to us almost 3 years ago, and back then, she didn’t even want to look at a human. She hadn’t had the best past. We don’t know much about her history, other than that she was an Amish driving horse and had some scars that told us she hadn’t always had an easy life.

We eventually discovered that Sugar is partially blind in her left eye, but that doesn’t seem to slow her down too much!

Her journey toward trusting people started with something simple: a few kids coming to the barn to read to her. We enrolled her in our Horse Powered Reading program alongside a group of four little ones. Sugar always seemed to feel more comfortable around people her own size.

We spent lots of time walking her, brushing her, braiding her mane, and simply sitting with her. And, personally, I gave her LOTS of hugs. I’d always tell her, “You’re gonna love this one day!”

And guess what? She does!

Sugar has learned that people can be kind, gentle, and trustworthy. As long as you approach her quietly, slowly, and with patience, she is happy to be your friend.

As her confidence grew, we started taking her to events. The smiles this little girl brings to people’s faces are priceless. Seeing how happy Sugar, Rex, and their buddy Buckwheat make others is one of the best feelings in the world. She has handled every new adventure with such a wonderful attitude!

And don’t let her size fool you… Sugar LOVES to drive! She’s a little powerhouse, and you would not believe how strong she is!

Of course, we can’t forget her love of treats! Her absolute best feature might just be the way she smacks her lips after eating one. 😂 That’s where a few of her nicknames came from: Sugar Smacks and The Lip Smacker!

Recently, we found a tiny western saddle that fits her perfectly, and one of our lesson students even found a girth that works for her English saddle! Sugar has officially started having a few lessons with the kids, and she’s doing GREAT!

And then there’s her voice… Sugar LOVES to whinny! Usually, it’s when she’s walking past the big horses, almost like she’s saying, “LOOK AT ME! LOOK WHAT I’M DOING!” 😂

One of my absolute favorite Sugar moments was at the Topsfield Fair this year when she decided to have a little conversation with the Belgians. She certainly wasn’t going to let those big horses steal the show!

From a little horse who once didn’t even want to look at a person to a confident, loving girl who brings smiles wherever she goes…

Sugar, you are proof that patience, kindness, and trust can make all the difference.

We love you, Sugar! Never stop being your little, big-personality self.

Adaptive Riding at Lazy J Ranch!

What a fun-filled hour we had today!

We started with a hands-on activity using toy tweezers to pick up and squeeze little animals! These activities help strengthen hand muscles, develop fine motor skills, and encourage hand-eye coordination. Then, it was time to match each animal to the correct colored bowl!

Next, we headed out to the outdoor arena with Blue for a sensory adventure!

We listened to the leaves crunching beneath Blue’s hooves, explored walking on harder ground, and finished with a little squish, squish through the mud!

Adaptive riding is about so much more than riding a horse. It provides opportunities to work on motor skills, sensory processing, coordination, confidence, all while having fun and building a special connection with our equine partners.

One hour packed with learning, exploring, and making memories!

Every activity has a purpose, every experience is an opportunity to grow, and every small accomplishment is worth celebrating!

Lessons Lately at Lazy J Ranch!

We are so thankful for our incredible lesson horses and the many ways they help our riders grow, both in and out of the saddle!

Horseback riding is about so much more than learning how to sit in the saddle, steer, and ask for a trot. It’s about building life skills that carry far beyond the barn. Every lesson gives our riders an opportunity to learn, problem-solve, overcome challenges, and discover just how capable they truly are.

Confidence: Learning something new, trying again after a mistake, and accomplishing a goal helps riders believe in themselves.

Strength: Riding builds physical strength, balance, coordination, and body awareness, while also helping riders develop emotional strength and resilience.

Critical Thinking: Horses don’t always respond the same way every time. Riders learn to pay attention, think through a situation, make adjustments, and figure out what works best.

Assertiveness & Communication: Horses teach us the importance of being clear, consistent, and confident in our communication. Riders learn to set boundaries, speak up, and communicate with purpose while still being kind and respectful.

Self-Esteem: There is something incredibly special about realizing that a 1,000-pound animal is listening to you, trusting you, and responding to your cues. Those little victories can make a BIG difference in how a rider sees themselves!

Patience, Responsibility & Empathy: Horses teach us that progress takes time, that our actions matter, and that understanding another being’s needs is just as important as our own.

Our lesson horses are more than just partners in the arena. They are teachers, confidence builders, and sometimes the reason a rider walks away smiling after a difficult day. Thank you Sonja, Luke, Melena, Blue, Bo, Stretch, Rex, Buckwheat and Sugar we love that we get to share our love for these horses with all of you !

We are so grateful for the special horses who show up for our riders, lesson after lesson, helping them grow into stronger, more confident individuals. The skills they learn here are skills they can carry into school, friendships, work, and everyday life.

🧚‍♀️🍄✨ What an AMAZING day at the Fairy & Gnome Walk! ✨🍄🧚‍♂️

We always have such a wonderful time at this magical event! Having something so special right here in Salisbury is incredible, and seeing people come from near and far to enjoy it makes it even better!

A HUGE thank you to Salisbury Parks & Recreation, Jen R. And Salisbury Elementary PTA for all the hard work, dedication, and love that goes into making this event such a success year after year!
Also to our team we could not do these events without all your help! Joe, Marianne, our awesome lesson kid volunteers and rest of the team that is always showing up !

Yesterday was filled with smiles, laughter, and some wonderful new connections!

We are so excited about what the future holds for Lazy J Ranch and Horses Healing Hearts! Both continue to grow, reach new people, and open doors to amazing opportunities!

The best is yet to come, and we’re just going UP, UP, UP!
